Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Work on extensions to the Yellow Brick Road had fallen way behind schedule. The Munchkin work-crews refused to even contemplate starting on the Emerald City by-pass until the issue of their stiff, scratchy work-clothes was addressed. Work finally resumed when new light-weight and soft drill uniforms were issued. A contented Spokes-Munchkin commented "We're happy to work now..."

Answer: "...we're not in canvas anymore."

Okay, I did say the alternative answers MIGHT be funny...
2. Positions have been announced for Team Oz, the latest franchise in the Musical Baseball League. The Cowardly Lion will play in the outfield - as far out as possible - and the Tin-Man, with that weird arm action, is the obvious choice for pitcher. Dorothy is perhaps more of a surprise, being named as catcher. But, as the feisty brunette explained:

Answer: "There's no plate like home."

It could be worse - really! This question was going to be about Dorothy's unusual choice of both species and name for a pet fish. Uh-huh, there's no plaice like Homer...
3. Things are looking a little ratty around Oz. Toto's got mange, Scarecrow's being forced to make do with last week's straw, and Dorothy's slippers are missing some rubies. What could possibly be the reason?

Answer: Some wear over the rainbow.

The whole thing was going to be on "The Wizard of Oz", but it got just too silly. I don't actually know if Dorothy had a German grandmother, or if either of them knew anything about sporting teams. I just kept thinking of Dorothy gently prompting with "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oma".
4. Maria, fresh from a battle with Captain Von Trapp over acceptable ways to raise children, picks up her guitar for a soothing sing-song. But tragedy! After the first strum, the A, E and G twang and curl back on themselves mockingly, and Maria begins to sob. Why is she so upset?

Answer: Those were a few of her favourite strings.

Of course, being a fan of "The Simpsons", the first thing Maria said when her strings broke was "D'oh - oh dear!"
5. The precocious Von Trapp children have tired of pulling silly pranks with spiders and moved into the modern age. They've got themselves a computer and written a little sound-file which will overdub the movie soundtrack every time somebody says the name of their Governess. They hit a snag when they got to storing it on their hard-drive, though. What's their dilemma?

Answer: How do you save a program like "My Rear"?

Being war-time, there were also a few problems with getting fertilizer for the Edelweiss. So, how DO you solve a problem like manure?
6. All that frolicking in fountains and running around on mountains has taken its toll. Maria caught a cold, and it swiftly passed to the Captain and then through all the Von Trapp children. So, for the moment, the hills are alive with the sound of...?

Answer: Mucus

Okay, so this is the one entry which is, as far as I know, not entirely original. A guy I used to work with - appropriately in an animation studio - used to tell terrible jokes, and one of them involved an odd sort of gargling rendition of "Climb Every Mountain". One of the advantages of post-nasal drip I suppose!
7. One of the things many people don't know about Captain Von Trapp is that he collects unusual animals from all the ports his ship visits around the world. What is the prize of his collection so far?

Answer: A Doha Deer

Don't you just love poetic license? I'd love to see how some of these animals would get on if transplanted from their natural environments to those I've stuck them in.
8. Over at Rydell High, Danny Zuko's English essay on "Romeo and Juliet" has not been well received. He's been called to see Principal McGee and explain why he has included slabs of text without inverted commas, some of it not even Shakespeare, and if he really thinks it's appropriate to graphically compare "that hot chick Juliet's assets" to those of Annette Funicello. Miss McGee's final comment before telling him to try again?

Answer: Hopelessly misquoted, too blue.

Well, I can't immediately think of a Shakespearian link, but there's more than a touch of "Pygmalion" (or, more appropriately for this quiz, "My Fair Lady") in the storyline of "Grease". But it might be a bit of a stretch to compare Didi Conn's Beauty School Dropout "Frenchie" with Rex Harrison's "Professor Higgins". Perhaps it's more a retelling of "The Ugly Duckling"? Hmm, yes, I can see Hans Christian Andersen fitting in much better with the T-Birds than would George Bernard Shaw. Actually, I think "The Emperor's New Suit" was originally a leather jacket with black stove-pipe jeans!
9. Danny Zuko was forced to undertake much embarrassed combing of greasy hair when he failed his History final. It was pointed out that in the essay section he had Medieval warriors fighting for ancient Mesopotamian culture in his composition entitled:

Answer: Those Sumer Knights

Yes, I could have stuck with the Shakespearian theme and used "Tell Me, Moor". But what I really wanted to use made me run into problems of pronunciation: which actress was considered for the role of Sandy in the remake of "Grease"? Demi Moore, Demi Moore...Or even funnier, imagining Dudley Moore as Danny!
10. Olivia Newton-John had already been cast in "Grease" and auditions for her co-star were in full swing. No sooner had Mr Travolta walked in the room when Olivia jumped up and cried "Stop the auditions!" Then she turned to Travolta and said:

Answer: "You're the John that I want!"

Well, that's it folks, show's over.

On behalf of our sponsors I'd like to thank you for being part of Pick-a-Pun. Remember, if pain persists, take two Aspirin and curse me in the morning!
