Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beginning with 'pig', what is both a renowned public square in Paris and a famous song written and recorded by Maurice Chevalier in 1946?

Answer: Pigalle

This public square and the surrounding neighborhood was named for Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) a famous French sculptor. It has been compared to New York's Times Square or visa-versa.

The song "Pigalle' may be attributed to two sources. Georges Ullmer in 1944 wrote "Pigalle". In subsequent years it was recorded by Jean Sablon, Charles Dumont, Franck Pourcel, Paul Anka, Bing Crosby, and Petula Clark.

Chevalier wrote his version in 1946 with a different melody and lyrics.
2. Beginning with 'pig', what might be given by parents to teach children the discipline of saving?

Answer: piggybank

During the Middle Ages there were really no financial institutions. People kept coins in a jar called a pygg after the clay that was used. In early days the 'y' was generally pronounced like a 'u'. A swine was called a 'picga', later pigge. As modern English language developed and the pronunciations changed, both words merged into one 'pig'. One theory is that the picga liked to roll in the mud. The mud was the clay that used for the clay jars.

Entrepreneurial potters, seizing on the accidental pun, began to mold piggybanks. The term "break the bank" may emerged from the act of taking the coins from the jar, although modern usage applies to casinos.

Here is an interesting quote from the Bible from 2 Kings 12:

"Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid. He placed it beside the altar. The priests who guarded the entrance put into the chest all the money that was brought to the temple of the Lord."
3. Beginning with with 'pig'. The bird classification Columbidae includes about 310 species and is found world wide. What is the most common name for this bird family?

Answer: Pigeon

Pigeons are often seen in cities and are called feral rock pigeons. Pigeons families are unique in that both sexes of pigeons produce "crop milk" to feed to their young, secreted by fluid-filled cells from the crop. Young pigeons are called "squabs", a term used also for pigeons used for consumption.
4. Beginning with 'pig', do you remember the time when your Mother told you to clean your room because it looked like a _________? Write the word that goes in the blank in the preceding sentence.

Answer: Pigsty

Dictionaries define 'pigsty' as an enclosure for pigs and informally as a dirty untidy place. The 'sty' part comes from Middle English sty, from Old English stî or stiġ. Similar roots are found in Germanic and Scandinavian languages.
5. Beginning with 'pig' who was one of Christopher Robin's friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, along with Winnie the Pooh?

Answer: Piglet

A.A, Milne created a wondrous world with Christopher Robin and the charming inhabitants of Ashdown Forest, called the Hundred Acre Wood in the books.

Piglet is a small animal who lives in his grandfather's house - the sign reads "TRESPASSERS W.", and Piglet asserts that it is short for "Trespassers William", his grandfather's name. Piglet is often afraid but can survive a crisis. He frequently defers to Pooh. Piglet is usually colored pink. Although he can read and write, he spells his name Piglit. His favorite food is 'haycorns'. In 2003 Piglet had his own movie.

But Piglet is only one character. Every child should get to know Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, Tigger, and Owl.
6. Beginning with 'pig', what is a "substance used for coloring or painting, especially a dry powder that, when mixed with oil, water, or another medium, constitutes a paint or ink", according to the Oxford Dictionary?

Answer: Pigment

Pigments are colors that have the quality to both reflect and absorb wavelengths of visible light. Most pigments are inorganic and have a metal base. They are most often used to create a special color. For instance, copper as pigment can be used to create Azurite, Han purple, Han blue, Egyptian blue, Malachite, Paris green, Phthalocyanine Blue BN, Phthalocyanine Green G, verdigris, viridian.
7. Beginning with 'pig', what is a hairstyle that consists of braided or plaited hair generally worn in back or on the sides?

Answer: Pigtail

"Pigtail" was used to describe the act of preparing tobacco for chewing but has been more generally applied to hair style. Not just limited to women, military groups have adopted pigtails as signs of tradition and identify.

In oriental cultures a pigtail (queue) was mandated as a sign of loyalty to the ruling dynasty.

Judy Garland was nearly eighteen when she made "The Wizard of OZ" so she was given pigtails to foster a more youthful image. Pippi Longstocking is pictured with her pigtails straight out to the side.

Ponytail is an alternate term referring to a single braid.
8. Beginning with 'pig', in the nursery rhyme played with infants counting toes, what is the name of each of the protagonists?

Answer: piggy

The rhyme is a counting one generally used to play with the toes of an infant or small child with each toe being a 'piggy'. Innocent enough.

To some it is a much more ominous story. One pig had roast beef but the pig who went to market may be the one who is slaughtered as one pig escaped.
9. Beginning with 'pig', what is the common name of the Amaranth plant?

Answer: pigweed

Gardeners have mixed feelings about the Amaranth or pigweed. It may appear without warning and could be a haven for insects. On the other hand, it is edible and in a salad similar to spinach. It may also be processed into a tea.
10. Beginning with 'pig', what is an informal word used to describe the ball used in American football?

Answer: Pigskin

The game of American football (to distinguish it from international football-- soccer) developed during the late nineteenth century. The first balls were often made of an inflated pig bladder. Later the bladder was put inside a leather cover. Today modern balls are of exacting specifications, with rubber or plastic bladders, and often with plastic covers.

When the forward pass became legal over time, the ball developed a more svelte shape.
