Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "_____ was a Bravo Cat, / who lived upon a barge; / In fact he was the roughest cat / that ever roamed at large"

Answer: Growltiger

AKA Gus the Theatre Cat, Growltiger is actually the name of the most famous character played by Gus in his career as an actor. In the course of the musical, this old actor tells the tale of the intimidating Growltiger and his 'last stand' against Siamese pirates to the Jellicle cats.

The character is only featured in the song, "Growltiger's Last Stand".
2. "_____ 's a mystery cat / He's called the Hidden Paw / For he's a master criminal who can defy the law"

Answer: Macavity

Macavity is a master criminal known as 'The Hidden Paw' and 'The Napoleon of Crime' for, while his criminality is well-known, he seems always able to hide any evidence of his crimes.

Macavity crashes the party that is the gathering of Jellicle cats to choose who will go to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new life. His entrance is accompanied by police sirens and chaos, and he spends much of the show trying to kidnap Demeter (a Jellicle Queen, along with Bombalurina).

After his explanatory song (sung by the aforementioned Jellicle Queens), he appears in the guise of Old Deuteronomy, but is exposed and must fight for his escape.
3. "You really had thought she'd ought to be dead / and who would ever suppose that that was / _____ , the Glamour Cat"

Answer: Grizabella

Grizabella (the Glamour Cat) is well past her prime, and has long been absent from the Jellicle tribe. She hopes to be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer, but the other cats refuse to take her back in.

Grizabella yearns for the days when she was young and happy, which is featured in the (perhaps most famous) song, "Memory."

Eventually, she is accepted back by the tribe, and is ultimately chosen by Old Deuteronomy to go to the Heaviside Layer.
4. "_____ is not skin and bones / In fact, he's remarkably fat / He doesn't haunt pubs, he has eight or nine clubs / For he's the St. James's Street Cat!"

Answer: Bustopher Jones

Bustopher Jones is wise and knowledgeable, and is well-respected by all the other cats. He is distinguished... and hefty, due to his love of winkles and shrimp at the gentlemen's clubs.

He is featured in his own song, appropriately entitled, "Bustopher Jones".
5. "_____ 's lived a long time / He's a cat who has lived many lives in succession / He was famous in proverb and famous in rhyme"

Answer: Old Deuteronomy

Old Deuteronomy is very old, one "who has lived many lives in succession," and is the revered leader of the Jellicle tribe. It is he who has the honor of choosing which cat goes to the Heaviside Layer and is born again.
6. "I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, / Her name is _____ / Her coat is of the tabby kind / With tiger stripes and leopard spots"

Answer: Jennyanydots

AKA the old Gumbie Cat, Jennyanydots could be considered lazy, for her love of sitting and sleeping in the warm sun, but when night comes, she is an organizational diva. She even manages to get the cockroaches to help with clean-up.
7. "_____ is a curious cat: / His disobliging ways are a matter of habit. / He is artful and knowing and doesn't care for a cuddle"

Answer: The Rum Tum Tugger

The Rum Tum Tugger is kittenlike in his boisterousness, craving the spotlight and the attentions of the other Jellicle cats (especially Bombalurina, Demeter and Cassandra). He is the rock star of the show, as is seen in his introductory song, sung by himself, and when he sings "Mister Mistoffelees".
8. "Oh, well I never! / Was there ever A cat so clever / as Magical _____ ?"

Answer: Mr. Mistoffelees

Mister Mistoffelees is a flashy young black-and-white kitten, known for his energetic performances and illusions. Along with Victoria, he opens the action of the musical with "The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball".

When the lights go out due to Macavity's machinations, the Rum Tum Tugger calls on Mister Mistoffelees to use his magic to restore the lights and find the missing Old Deuteronomy.
9. "_____ ! Where is _____ ? / Has he gone to hunt the thimble? / We must find him or the train can't start!"

Answer: Skimbleshanks

AKA The Railway Cat, Skimbleshanks is a dignified, elderly cat who has an important role in the Jellicle tribe - to ensure the mail train runs on time. He knows his importance (and acts it), but can often be seen helping Jennyanydots with the young kittens.

He sings his own song, entitled "Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat".
10. "His eyes were like fireballs fearfully blazing, / He gave a great yawn, and his jaws were amazing; / And when he looked out through the bars of the area / You never saw anything fiercer or hairier!"

Answer: Rumpus Cat

When Munkustrap narrates the story of "The Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles" to entertain Old Deuteronomy, it is the Great Rumpus Cat who jumps into the story as the superhero who scares away the warring (cats dressed up as) dog factions.
