The first time we saw a Saiyan transform into a Super Saiyan on screen, it was Goku, but there had been another a thousand years before the beginning of "Dragon Ball Z".

Vegeta told of the legend of Yamoshi, a righteous Saiyan who, with his five companions, fought to destroy the evil Saiyan race. When cornered, he became a Super Saiyan, but he was still defeated, despite his ferocity.

Vegeta's father was the King of the Saiyan race, but was killed by the warlord Frieza. Vegeta began as a super villain, later evolving into an anti-hero and then into a hero. He is obsessed with surpassing Goku in strength and prominence.

Goten is the son of Goku and Chi-Chi, and Gohan's little brother. He transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time while training with his mother. The form comes naturally to him, and he has perfect control and mastery over it and can use it as though it was his normal base form.

Goku is the main protagonist of the "Dragon Ball" series. The form of Super Saiyan was first achieved by Goku after witnessing his best friend Krillin's death at the hands of Frieza.

Broly was born on the same day as Goku, but to a low class family. As Broly grew in strength, King Vegeta feared him and ordered his (and his father's) execution. His strength allowed him to survive, and save his father, but he also became uncontrollable and was driven by a need to destroy.

In an alternate timeline, Trunks first transforms into a Super Saiyan after witnessing his mentor's death (Gohan). Three years later, he travels back in time to before Goku's death, saving his life and becoming known as 'Future Trunks' to the fandom.

When Goku and Vegeta first attempt the Fusion Dance to combat Janemba, it doesn't work properly, creating 'Fat Gogeta' (AKA 'Veku) who defends himself by passing gas. After they defuse, their second attempt is more successful, and Super Saiyan Gogeta easily defeats Janemba.

Hailing from Universe 6, young Caulifla was convinced by Cabba to join him in the Tournament of Power. Caulifla was able to complete the transformation to Super Saiyan with minimal effort.

The main antagonist from the 'Future' Trunks saga, Zamasu was a Kai from Universe 10 whose mission was to destroy all mortals. The character was shrouded in mystery until his true identity as Zamasu was revealed in Episode 60 of Dragon Ball Super, "Back to the Future - Goku Black's Identity Revealed!!"

Gohan did not initially train to be a warrior, choosing instead a scholar's path. The invasion of Earth forced him to fight, however, and he underwent training. His first transformation to Super Saiyan occurred while training with his father in the Room of Spirit and Time.
