The six large tapestries of the 'Unicorn Tapestries' were brought to New York in 1922 for an exhibition. They were bought by J D Rockefeller Jr, and were displayed at his apartment for several years.

In 1937, J D Rockefeller Jr gave the tapestries in his possession to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to be displayed in The Cloisters. The fragments were bought separately from Count Gabriel de la Rochefoucauld, a member of the family which originally owned the full set. The Cloisters opened in 1938, and all seven tapestries have been on display ever since.
