Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kyleisalive, being young and active, has landed a job as a 'sticker-up'. With which traditional pub game is this associated?

Answer: Skittles

The 'sticker' or 'sticker-up' is the person who has to reset the skittles after they've been knocked down, and clear loose ones from the alley. Skittles is played in many pubs, and usually has only nine pins. These are widely spaced and it is possible for the ball (wooden) to go through the middle without knocking down any skittles. Failing to hit any pins with all three balls is known as a 'beaver' and leads to much ridicule. Kyle may be disappointed to find that the usual pay is free beer and tips, but on the other hand, maybe not.
2. Zorba-Scank has been offered work selling cloth. What job title will she have?

Answer: Mercer

The name 'mercer' comes from the French and relates to dealers in fine materials, such as silk, rather than local fabrics. A 'lavender' was another name for a washer woman and a 'cutler' sharpens knives. A 'nedeller' made needles. Zorba-Scank believes that her sales skills will lead her to great success in her new career, and she can dress up in the fine materials when things are quiet.
3. Snowman has found his dream job as a British police officer. Which nickname is he unlikely to be given?

Answer: Tommy

Both 'Bobby' and 'Peeler' come from Sir Robert Peel, who was responsible for the founding of the Metropolitan Police Force in 1829. 'Bizzy' is used in the Liverpool area, and has two explanations that I can find. The first is that the police are always 'too busy' to respond to the ordinary people and the other is that they are 'busybodies', interfering where they are not wanted. 'Tommy' refer to a generic name for a soldier - 'Tommy Atkins' - which has been used since the 18th century. Snowman doesn't care what you call him -"you're nicked" anyway.
4. Looney_tunes will be working as a 'clippie'. What job will she doing?

Answer: Bus conductress

The name 'clippies' was given to the conductors on public transport who sold and then clipped your ticket as evidence that you had paid. The other options involve cutting in some form, and were chosen in the hope of misleading you. Most public transport these days involves paying the driver, and the job has mostly disappeared. Looney_tunes feels lucky to have found her job working for a tram (streetcar) museum, as she sometimes feels like a museum piece herself.
5. Salami-swami is a craftsman, and will be making wooden chair legs in his new occupation as which of these, which nowadays has a different meaning?

Answer: Bodger

A billier made axes and a bowyer made bows. A butner was a button maker. A bodger was a highly skilled wood turner, particularly in the Buckinghamshire area. The bodger worked in the woods to make the legs before selling them to be made into chairs. More recently, bodger has come to mean someone who mends something badly.

This is reflected in the name of Salami-swami's previous employers, who were builders called 'Bodgit and Scarper'.
6. Leith90 is good with her hands and was the top choice for the position of 'chiffonier'. What 'crowning glory' will she be making?

Answer: Wigs

The word 'chiffonier' is now used for a piece of furniture, often used for storing lingerie but was used in Medieval times for a wigmaker. Hats are made by 'milliners' and I can't find specialist names for tiara or veil makers. Leith90 has asked me to mention that male FT members can contact her in complete confidence.

Her discretion is guaranteed, at least until she is in the Author Lounge.
7. Adams627 has moved to Wales and found a job with a privately owned coalmine. Which of these occupations has no connection to coalmining?

Answer: Warrener

'Collier' and 'pitman' are both terms for miners. A 'keeker' was in charge of quality control and weighing of the coal at the colliery. A 'warrener' was in charge of managing rabbit warrens and trapping rabbits for meat on an estate. Most of the coal mines in Wales have been closed as it is no longer economically viable to extract. Adams627 misheard the job offer, which he thought was 'gold miner', the video game, on which he has the world record score.
8. Guitargoddess will be putting her medical training to good use, while working in which occupation?

Answer: Accoucheuse

'Accoucheuse' is an old name for a midwife and comes from the French, meaning 'present at the bedside'. A 'lorimer' was a maker of horse gear and a 'brabener' was a weaver. A 'vintner' was, and still is, a wine maker and seller. Guitargoddess wants all expectant mothers on the site to know that she is the best at her job.

She has a map showing her where all the gooseberry bushes in the world can be found.
9. Rowena 8482 has been taken on as a 'jagger', where she will be selling which foodstuff?

Answer: Fish

A 'jagger' was a fish peddler, and a 'ripper' also sold fish. Fruit and vegetables were sold by 'costermongers' and bread by 'bakers' or 'baxters'. Rowena 8482 is an 'earth mother' and is happy to be providing sustenance for her fellow authors, for a suitable fee, of course.
10. Eburge starts work next week making arrows. What job advert did he reply to?

Answer: Fletcher

The name originates from the French word for arrow, which is flèche. A 'cooper' made barrels and casks, using staves and hoops. A 'hillier' was a roof tiler and a 'chandler' originally made and sold candles. Eburge has always thought he'd make a good 'Robin Hood' as he looks great in tights.
