Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first exhibition of the painters dubbed Impressionists was held at:

Answer: Nadar's studios

Nadar was a flamboyant French photographer who supported the work of the impressionists. Nadar loaned them his premises. The official Salon rejected most of them. And the Salon des refuses was back in 1863.
2. Who did not participate in the 1st group show?

Answer: Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt was in Paris and exhibiting in the Salon where Degas noticed her work.
3. In the 1875 show, who was not with them?

Answer: Manet

Manet never did give in and exhibit with them. He kept on trying to challenge the establishment.
4. Which budding artist, who would later exhibit with them, and become a major figure, was still a stockbroker and amassing a nice collection of their work?

Answer: Paul Gauguin

Pissarro would turn in his grave if he knew I'd said that about him. Gauguin, the more you read about him, the less you like him, but I sure like his work!
5. Which Independent artist was painting scenes in 1872 from New Orleans during a visit to see family members?

Answer: Degas

6. Why did painter Berthe Morisot miss the 1879 show, the only one she ever missed?

Answer: maternity leave

Morisot's daughter Julie was born. Her husband was Edouard Manet's brother Eugene. Manet was a dear friend and admirer but he was already married when he met her.
7. Mary Cassatt, American expatriate, could easily be characterized as someone who focused on:

Answer: people

Women and children in particular.
8. In 1882, which art dealer organized the 7th group show with only 8 participants?

Answer: Durand-Ruel

9. Which painter's death after having his leg amputated in 1883 was a deep blow to all of the painters in the group?

Answer: Edouard Manet

Manet, despite the fact that he never actually exhibited with them, was deeply respected by most of them. The influences went both ways however. Morisot was more affected as he was her friend and her brother-in-law both.
10. The 1886 show marked another trend and sparked off controversy amongst the old timers. What was the controversial work?

Answer: Seurat's La Grande Jatte

Seurat's painting was the beginning of the Neo-Impressionist movement. Often lumped with the technique pointillisme, they actually preferred the term divisionists. The critics hated it. And especially that monkey!
