Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a large pond in the centre of the picture with a house on the left and fields in the distance. A cart is sitting in the shallows on the near side of the pond.

Answer: "The Haywain" - John Constable

Not strictly speaking an Impressionist, but certainly one of the major influences on the genre, Constable was preoccupied with the painting of light and its effect on surrounding landscapes. "The Haywain" is probably his most famous work and won gold medals at the Paris Salon in 1824.
2. Woman reclining nude and staring straight at the painter, while servant in the background tries to show her a bouquet of flowers. A black cat stands at the end of the bed.

Answer: "Olympia" - Edouard Manet

Manet never actually exhibited with the Impressionists but was instrumental in the formation of this new style of painting. His celebrity was such that a group of followers collected round him at the Cafe Guerbois. "Olympia" was hugely controversial when first shown due to its realistic style.
3. The view is of a river with a grand building in the distance on the right bank. The building has a clock tower. There is a jetty immediately in front on the viewer. The colours are predominantly greys and blues as it is a misty day.

Answer: "Westminster Bridge" - Claude Monet

Monet did many studies of the Thames, revelling in the different sunrises, sunsets, mists and fogs of London with their respective effects on light and reflection. A dominant force within the Impressionist movement, Monet did not exhibit at three of the eight Impressionist exhibitions due to various disagreements.
4. A country track runs downhill between houses. One of the houses in the mid-distance extends to the centre of the canvas and its notable for its dark windows. The rest of the town is visible in the far distance stretching along the valley floor.

Answer: "The Suicide's House" - Paul Cezanne

Cezanne had a bold style, both in technical painting techniques and also in the overall style of his work, and this boldness is evident in the lines, shapes and colour of "The Suicide's House". It is unfortunately true that a man hanged himself in the house.
5. A tree on the left of the canvas frames the picture with its trunk and branches. The painter is on a hill overlooking a valley floor of fields and small buildings. A very large hill rises up at the opposite end of the valley.

Answer: "Mont Sainte-Victoire" - Paul Cezanne

Cezanne differed from the other Impressionists in that he was less concerned with the effects of light and atmosphere on how things looked, and was more preoccupied with the objects themselves. "Mont Sainte-Victoire" is a perfect example of this emphasis, especially if you compare it with, for example, Monet's "Westminster Bridge".
6. A young woman and small child look separately out of the canvas at the painter with a crowd milling around them. It is raining.

Answer: "Umbrellas" - Auguste Renoir

In the middle of painting "Umbrellas", Renoir went travelling to Italy. When he returned and continued with the painting, the fashions in Italy had obviously influenced him... if you look at the clothing of the female characters, you can see the new simpler style as opposed to the old flouncy designs. Also, note the tree in the background is painted in a style reminiscent of Cezanne.
7. A mix of men, women, children and pets (two dogs and a monkey!) take their leisure by a river on a sunny summer day. The painting appears to be created using lots of tiny dots.

Answer: "A Sunday Afternoon at the Grande Jatte" - Georges Seurat

Seurat's relatively rigid compositions (there is little suggestion of movement in his figures) were deliberately different to the traditional Impressionists. Notably though, he took a number of sketches to help him compose his paintings and the sketches matched the usual free flowing Impressionist style.
8. Three women in the foreground are messing around on the bank of a river, splashing water and generally enjoying themselves. Two women in the mid-distance look to be having a much calmer conversation.

Answer: "The Bathers" - Auguste Renoir

The attention given to the nude figures is striking in contrast to the very simple composition of the trees in the background.
9. A room full of ballet dancers is listening to the instructions of a man in grey leaning on a stick.

Answer: "The Dancing Class" - Edgar Degas

Degas did a number of studies of ballet dancers. I love the use of lines in this particular painting: the floorboards, the pillars, the ceiling and the figures all contrast against one another.
10. A woman in a black and white striped gown (probably silk) and wearing a pink rose corsage is sitting in an opera box. The gentleman behind her is obviously bored with the performance as he is using the opera glasses to look at the other members of the audience.

Answer: "The Box" - Auguste Renoir

The gentleman who posed for Renoir and who became the inattentive man with the opera glasses, was actually Renoir's brother, Edmond.
11. Four well dressed women are surrounded by trees and shrubs. Two are standing on the left of the canvas with a third seated on the grass admiring a posey of flowers. The fourth woman in a white polka dot dress is moving at some haste at the right of the picture, along the path towards the back left of the frame.

Answer: "Women in the Garden" - Claude Monet

The gallaries refused to buy this painting and so Bazille bought it, to help his friend Monet who was in desperate financial need. When Bazille was killed in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, his father made a swap with Edouard Manet... the "Women in the Garden" for Monet's portrait of Bazille which Manet then owned.
12. A woman sits on a bench against a wall, she is cheaply dressed and is looking at the ground, lost in thought. Beside her, a man sits, more watchful than his female companion. Two glasses sit on a table in front of them.

Answer: "L'Absinthe" - Edgar Degas

The picture caused a scandal as it was considered to display the effects of a dissipated lifestyle. In fact however, the people in the painting were known to Degas, the woman was well known actress Ellen Andree, and the man, Marcellin Desboutin was a painter and engraver. The liquid in Marcellin Desboutin's glass was apparently black coffee!
13. Waterlilies in a pond.... painted by....?

Answer: Claude Monet

The garden was at Giverny, France at a house that Monet purchased in 1890 (although he had lived in the area for the previous seven years). He had a hand in creating the water garden himself and then immortalised it in his beautiful sequence of "Nympheas" paintings.
14. Two women in the immediate foreground sit on a sandy beach holding parasols. The one on the left is wearing a white dress and straw hat while the one on the right is wearing a black dress with black hat. The brush strokes are very bold and broad in this painting.

Answer: "Beach at Trouville" - Claude Monet

The woman in the white dress was Camille, to whom Monet had just become married. The woman in black was Camille's sister
15. A woman stands behind a surface covered with bottles and fruit. Behind her, there is a mirror in which you can see reflected a night club or hotel of some kind thronged with people. The woman is resting her hands on the surface in front of her and her eyes are distant, possibly even sad.

Answer: "The Bar at the Folies-Bergere" - Edouard Manet

Manet was dying by the time this work was painted in 1882. A year later he was dead. He did however at least have the satisfaction of having his art accepted during his lifetime (albeit sometimes with a struggle).
