Pope Sixtus IV was a Della Rovere pope as was Pope Julius II. Both were major contributors to the art the chapel contains. Pope John Paul II was the Pope during the 1980's 1990's and the first part of the 2000's
Pope Leo X was the Pope at the begining of the Reformation.

Answer: Star field on a blue background

The original ceiling was covered in the traditional byzantine motif of a blue star field. It was later (to the present day) covered with nine scenes from the Old Testament.
