Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the creators of the musical "Two Gentlemen of Verona" was Galt MacDermot. What other musical did he have a hand in writing?

Answer: Hair

Galt MacDermot, along with Gerome Ragni and James Rado, created the smash-hit hippie show "Hair". Interesting side note: my aunt's middle school health teacher was Gerome Ragni's brother. Cool.
2. Both the play and the musical take place in Verona, of course. But what is the other city that hosts much of the action?

Answer: Milan

One of the title's Two Gentlemen, Valentine sets off for Milan to seek his fame and fortune, and he is followed by his best friend Proteus, and Proteus is followed by his lover Julia (and in the musical, Julia's maid Lucetta as well).
3. What happens to Julia in the musical that does NOT happen to her in Shakespeare's play?

Answer: She gets pregnant.

In the song "Two Gentlemen of Verona", which Julia sings with Lucetta and the female chorus, the ladies bewail their fate: they cannot travel to Milan to tell Proteus the news of Julia's pregnancy, because they, not being men, cannot travel alone.
4. In the play, whose idea is it for Julia to dress as a man to visit Proteus in Milan?

Answer: Julia's

In the musical, the idea comes from the smart-mouthed maid, Lucetta, but Shakespeare's play give Julia the credit.
5. In both the play and the musical, which of the following men is NOT in love with Silvia?

Answer: Sebastian

Sebastian is the boy's name Julia uses when she reaches Milan. Eglamour is Silvia's secret lover, Valentine her admirer, and Thurio her fiance. Proteus, too, falls in love with her, which of course, creates problems for his pregnant lover Julia!
6. What is the name of Launce's dog, who is given to Julia as a gift?

Answer: Crab

Poor Launce! He has a whole monologue bemoaning the fact that his entire family wept to see him travel to Milan with Proteus, but the dog never even shed a tear.
7. Who originated the role of Proteus in the musical version?

Answer: Raul Julia

Yep! Long before he was Gomez Addams, Raul Julia played the equally suave (and surprisingly well-sung) lover/traitor Proteus in "Two Gents" who wrote "one thousand love letters" and who sings some of the wittiest songs in the show.
8. The musical is traditionally cast with actors of various ethnic backgrounds. Of what ethnicity are Julia and Proteus?

Answer: Hispanic

Near the end of the musical, Julia bursts into her native tonuge--in song, no less!
9. Which character in the play does NOT end up romantically linked to another?

Answer: The Duke

Yes, even the comic servant Launce gets hooked up with a milkmaid. Happily, Proteus returns to Julia and Valentine marries Silvia. In addition, in the musical, Thurio and Lucetta end up together!
10. The musical is one that does not take itself seriously. In fact, the last song mentions hysteria, penis envy, and other "issues". What does "Love" eventually "do" to the characters?

Answer: Love drives them sane

During the final song in the show, the cast, with tongue in cheek, sing that "Love has driven me sane"...funny.

"Two Gents" not a terribly popular piece, which is surprising since it won a Tony for Best Musical! If you like the musical quality of "Hair" and the band The Fifth Dimension...it's sort of like that. Definitely worth a listen!
