Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Officer Lockstock at the beginning of the play, Urinetown is the name of the city where the action takes place.

Answer: False

At the beginning of the show, Officer Lockstock tells the audience that they are at "Urinetown" the musical, not the place. The city is actually unnamed, "It takes place in a town like any town...that you might find in a musical."
2. How many policeman respond to the riot at the end of Act 1?

Answer: 2

Officer Lockstock and Officer Barrel. Josephine Strong says, "They have 1, 2 -- 2 men and we're all so poor."
3. Who keeps reappearing in Bobby's memory, along with Joseph "Old Man" Strong, repeating the joke, "Bobby, reason with the woman, I'm a little short this morning." "No shorter than yesterday, unless I've grown."

Answer: Tiny Tom

Tiny Tom is a little dim.
4. Finish the lyric: " _________ not sorry".

Answer: All of these

The song is called "We're Not Sorry" but in it all of the other answers appear.
5. Who is Officer Barrel secretly carrying a torch for?

Answer: Officer Lockstock

In Act 2, he confesses his love, just before he is murdered by the rioting Poor.
6. Who was the one-time lover of Caldwell B. Cladwell?

Answer: Penelope Pennywise

"Hope is my daughter." *gasp*
"And I am her mother." *bigger gasp*
7. According to Little Sally, we are all in Urinetown. In her mind it is a ___________ place.

Answer: metaphysical

During "What is Urinetown?", Little Sally confuses Officer Lockstock with this pronouncement so she can escape from him to join the Rebel Poor.
8. What does Officer Lockstock tell us is the "central conceit of the show"?

Answer: Everyone has to use public bathrooms in order to take care of their private business

"Well, Little Sally, suffice it to say that in "Urinetown" (the musical)
everyone has to use public bathrooms in order to take care of their
private business. That's the central conceit of the show!"

Little Sally and Officer Lockstock talk about hydraulics later in the show, but he dismisses them as unimportant to the show, because "Sometimes, in a musical, it's better to focus on one big thing than a lot of smaller things... the audience likes it better and it's easier to write."
9. What is the Amenity Number that Ms. Pennywise and Bobby work at?

Answer: 9

"As the sign says, it's a 'public amenity', meaning public toilet. These people have been waiting for hours to get in. It's the only amenity they can afford to get into.... if you're down on your luck you have to come to a place like this -- one of the poorest, filthiest urinals in town."
10. What political economist is referenced at the end of the show?

Answer: Robert Thomas Malthus

"Hail Malthus!"

Robert Thomas Malthus was known for his theory that because population grows at a rate greater than that of food production, the Earth will be unable to sustain the human race beyond a certain point. Water consumption would likewise be affected.

Thanks for taking my first quiz. Hope you enjoyed it.
