The Venus de Milo was discovered by a peasant named Yorgos in an underground cavern on the Aegean island of Melos.

Her arms were never found. For a time, King Louis XVIII's art advisors tried to make arms that could be attached to the broken sculpture. It was finally decided to leave her as she was found. Venus is the Roman name for Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty.
