Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "American Gothic", "Daughters of the Revolution", and "Fall Plowing" are all paintings by which noted American artist?

Answer: Grant Wood

Grant Wood (1891-1942) is best known for his depictions of the rural Midwest. His most famous work is probably "American Gothic" which he painted in 1930. The painting depicts a farmer standing beside his spinster daughter in front of a white wooden house.

The farmer is holding a pitchfork indicating his place in the field and the female is dressed in an apron indicative of her place at home. It has become one of the most parodied paintings created in the 20th century.
2. "The Birth of Venus", "Primavera", and "Trial of Moses" are just three of the paintings by which Italian Renaissance painter?

Answer: Sandro Botticelli

Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" which hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy is probably the most well known painting by this great artiste. It depicts the goddess Venus, standing on a sea shell in the water, nude except for her long knee-length hair.

A handmaiden rushes to her with a red garment to cover the newly born goddess. While this painting used Roman Mythology for inspiration, many if not most of Botticelli's paintings dealt with topics found in the Christian Bible.
3. Campbell's soup cans, Coca-Cola products, and Marilyn Monroe were but a few of the topics that were painted or silk-screened by which American artist?

Answer: Andy Warhol

American painter and print-maker Andy Warhol was one of the leading figures in the pop art movement. His works depicted many of America's most famous celebrities, from Elizabeth Taylor to Muhammad Ali. Not only was Andy Warhol a painter and a silkscreen printer, but he dabbled in film-making and photography as well.

His most famous painting is "The Blue Boy", which now hangs in the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
5. "The Potato Eaters", "The Starry Night", and "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" are just some of the works by which prolific post-Impressionist Dutch painter?

Answer: Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a tortured soul who suffered for years from anxiety, depression and other mental illness. Van Gogh is credited with creating over 2,000 artworks in his short life; 860 of these were oil paintings, the others consisted of watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints.

His first major work was "The Potato Eaters", which he completed in 1885. There is no doubt that his battle with mental illness affected his artwork and led to his death by suicide at the age of 37.
6. The Statue of David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Pieta are all works of which multi-talented Italian artist?

Answer: Michelangelo

Michelangelo (1475-1564) was an extremely talented artist who was able to create fantastic paintings like those seen on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He was also a sculptor of the finest skills, as well as a skilled architect. In his lifetime, he was considered the greatest living artist by many Europeans. The next 500 years have only reinforced that popularly held opinion.
7. "The Mona Lisa", "The Last Supper", and "The Annunciation" are just some of the works by which notable Renaissance artist?

Answer: Leonardo Da Vinci

Answer: James Abbott Whistler

James Abbott Whistler (1834-1903) is most well-known for a portrait of his mother known popularly as "Whistler's Mother", but which is correctly titled "Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother". Known for using muted, natural colors, most of Whistler's paintings are done in shades of black, white, gray, and brown.

He was also known for his butterfly signature and took great care as to where he placed his signature in a painting.
9. "The Persistence of Memory", "The Hallucinogenic Toreador", and "The Face of War" are all works by which 20th century Spanish artist who was a prominent surrealist?

Answer: Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali is considered by many to be the greatest of the surrealist artists. His painting "The Persistence of Memory" with its melting clocks is probably his most well-known painting. In March of 1982, in St. Petersburg, Florida the Salvador Dali Museum opened. Over 96 oil paintings and 1,300 graphics sculptures and other works are periodically rotated.
10. Which American artist is probably best known for his covers of "The Saturday Evening Post" and "Boys Life" and "Life" and "Look" magazines?

Answer: Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell's artwork graced the covers of the "Saturday Evening Post" for over four decades. His work focused on everyday life and in most of his art the topic was more important than the technique. His contributions to America earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

He created over 4,000 original works of art and while there are those who dismiss his work as over-sentimental there are others who believe that his work captures a part of Americana that seems to have disappeared all too fast.
