Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The musical wasn't the original device for the "Wicked" story. That was a book. But in which year was this book copyrighted?

Answer: 1995

Bestselling author Gregory Maguire's novel has sold in excess of three quarters of a million copies, and now enjoys renewed interest as a tie-in publication to the musical.
2. Who wrote the music and lyrics (NOT the book/screenplay)?

Answer: Stephen Schwartz

Stephen Schwartz also brought us "Godspell", "Pippin", "Children of Eden", "The Prince of Egypt", etc. Ben Elton's leap into Musicals was the Queen-based "We Will Rock You", doing very nicely thank-you. Both Sondheim and Lloyd Webber have several smash hit shows to their names, far too numerous to list here.
3. The show's New York home is of course on Broadway. At which of the many theatres there did it open?

Answer: The Gershwin

The Ambassador is known for it's long run of "Chicago". Bring your broomstick to The New Amsterdam in case Mary Poppins loses hers, and you could join "A Chorus Line" at The Schoenfeld. The Gershwin is located at 222 West 51st St. This theatre opened in 1972 with the Musical "Val Galactica". It also served as a concert venue for pop and jazz artists, and its lobby includes the Theatre Hall of Fame. "Wicked", as they say in the business, 'went up' there in October 2003.
4. There is a German version of "Wicked". Which city is the host of its premiere?

Answer: Stuttgart

There is huge interest in musicals in Germany, with several dedicated theatres throughout the country. The Stuttgart SI (Stuttgart International) complex also contains restaurants, bars, nightclubs, as well as the Palladium Theatre. Cologne's Musical Dome is a spaceship-like structure right beside the main railway station, whilst Berlin and Hamburg can boast more conventional - but equally magnificent - venues.
5. And so to the show itself. In "What Is This Feeling?", how does Glinda reply to the students telling her she is a martyr?

Answer: Well; these things are sent to try us

In this number, Glinda and Elphaba tear lumps out of each other like there's no tomorrow. Although Glinda begins by taking the moral high ground and pledging to "rise above it", it isn't long before face, voice, and clothing are picked out by both parties as things worthy of loathing - and that's just for starters! "Every little trait, however small....".
6. Elphaba defies gravity and, as she takes her leave, invites those who would care to find her to -

Answer: Look to the western sky

"Defying Gravity" is easily the most dramatic number in the score. Elphaba offers Glinda the chance to join her as together they would be unlimited. Glinda declines, but wishes Elphaba well. How good CAN one be?
7. At the end of "One Short Day", there is a dramatic announcement. What is it?

Answer: The Wizard will see you now

The Guard informs Glinda and Elphaba that the Wizard will see them now. They, along with some tourists, have been delighted by the many attractions the Emerald City has to offer.
8. Fiyero, in "Dancing Through Life", suggests he and Glinda go to the Ozdust Ballroom. What time, so the song goes, does Fiyero propose to pick Glinda up?

Answer: Around eight

And off they go. Now that they´ve met each other, it's clear they deserve each other. Oh; and each says the other is perfect. Probably for the best if you're planning to dance through life!
9. In "March of the Witch Hunters", the Ozians tell the Hunters to go and hunt her and find her and then what?

Answer: kill her

In this, they are wished good fortune by the Vicious Woman, and this sentiment is echoed by the Crowd, the Rabid Man, and the Tin Man. The Lion, we are reminded, also has every reason to want wickedness to be punished.
10. Well end on a macabre note, if we may. It's an accepted fact that no-one mourns the Wicked, and what item won't you find laid on their grave?

Answer: Lily

Not only that, but the Wicked also cry alone, are scorned by good men, die alone, and no-one cries "they won't return" etc. etc. It's not much to look forward to, is it? Now; pass me a bat sandwich and my big book of sorcery. HA HA HA HA HA!
