Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed the hit 2001 musical film 'Moulin Rouge'?

Answer: Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann did indeed direct the 2001 masterpiece 'Moulin Rouge', starring Nicole Kidman as Satine and Ewan McGregor as Christian. His other famous films include 'Romeo & Juliet' and 'Strictly Ballroom'.
2. Stephanie J Block originated the role of Elphaba in the hit musical 'Wicked' on Broadway.

Answer: False

Totally false! Idina Menzel originated the role of 'Elphaba' on Broadway, with co-stars including Kristen Chenoweth (Glinda), Norbert Leo Butz (Fiyero) and Joel Grey (Wizard). Stephanie J Block did, however, do the initial workshops for 'Wicked', in which she rehearsed for the lead role of Elphaba.
3. Which actor/actress won an academy award for their role in the 2002 film musical 'Chicago' (directed by Rob Marshall)?

Answer: Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly)

Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her participation in the 2002 box office smash 'Chicago'. She played the feisty role of Velma Kelly, a female prisoner awaiting trial for the murders of her husband and sister. Her big musical numbers in the movie are: 'All That Jazz', 'I Cannot Do It Alone' and 'Nowadays' (duet with Renée Zellweger).
I really believe that Renée Zellweger should have won the Academy Award for Best Actress -- I felt so sorry for her! She was, and still is, the best Roxie Hart I have ever seen!
4. Jesse L Martin originated the role of Collins on Broadway in 'Rent'. Which famous TV program did the musical star regularly appear in, beginning in 1999?

Answer: Law & Order

He picked up the role of detective Ed Green in the NBC series 'Law & Order'.
5. Jamie Foxx won an Academy Award (Oscar) for his role as Curtis Taylor Jr. in the hit musical movie 'Dreamgirls'.

Oh no he didn't. But 'American Idol' star Jennifer Hudson did - she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Effie White, the role famously created by Jennifer Holliday on Broadway.

7. When the movie musical 'Mamma Mia' was released in 2008, which movie did it overtake as the 14th highest grossing film of all time?

Answer: The Incredibles

'The Incredibles' held on to the 14th spot for a staggering four years but was knocked down to 15th by the box office smash 'Mamma Mia', starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters to name a few.
8. Who wrote the music for the award-winning British musical 'Billy Elliot'?

9. Of the following choices, which original production had the longest run in London's West End?

Answer: The Phantom Of The Opera

It is indeed 'The Phantom of the Opera', though 'Les Miserables' had run longer by the time of this writing. This musical written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber features such classic songs as 'All I Ask of You', 'Think of Me' and of course the title song. The original production at Her Majesty's Theatre in London ran for over 22 years. 'Cats' ran for 21 years in the West End, showing at the New London Theatre until 11 May 2002. 'Rent' only ran for three months at the Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End. 'Chitty' opened at the London Palladium on April 16 2002 and closed in September 2005.
10. Who played the title role in the 1982 film adaptation of 'Annie'?

Answer: Aileen Quinn

Aileen Quinn played the loud-mouthed, confident 12-year-old but this was in fact her first and only screen performance. The film also starred Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters and Carol Burnett in her classic performance as Miss Hannigan.
