Since she's going north anyway, he asks her to deliver a scroll to his steading, which she gladly agrees to do. Much later, Paks finds out that elves she meets in the mountains erased her mission from her head so that she would go where they wanted her to go. However, they delivered the scroll for her.

She tells part-elf Macenion that her name is elven for "tower of the mountains". Macenion tells her she's wrong and that her name means "royal tower" in Aaren, a human language, and explains how the corruption of meaning occurred.

Macenion is surprised that Paks is so good with elven horses and discovers that her ring from the Duke is able to control animals. The ring was originally taken from a town and given as a gift, so the Duke didn't realize its magical power.

Answer: Snowcat

Macenion tells Paks to use the ring to calm the snowcat while he kills it. She feels that it's wrong to kill a creature this way, even a hideous one who prevents souls from reaching the afterlife, and she's very angry when the elf tells her she could have simply sent the cat away. Paks later gives up the ring as penance.

Answer: Elfane taig

The elven lord had been under an enchantment for many years. Paks defeats the evil, though Macenion dies. What a taig is, Paks doesn't start to find out until the next book, but it has to do with borders and the elven kingdoms, which aren't entirely in the human world.

Gird started out as a farmer, not a fighter, so the axe is associated with him, and fighters on the Gird granges are given instruction in axe fighting. Paks gets angry that she can't get the moves right and ends up being dressed down by the weapons master for not taking her grange training seriously. In the aftermath of this encounter, Paks decides to become a Girdsman.

Paladins are not like mages, who command power. Instead, they ask their gods or saints, who may or may not grant the power. The fourth paladin power is protection from evil mental attacks.

Paladin candidates are normally sequestered from the world, as they are more susceptible to evil forces during their training than before or after it. However, as a reward for finding the scrolls that point out Luap's stronghold, Paks is allowed to go on the quest.

While Paks doesn't meet Achrya herself, she sees a giant spider representative when she fights underground. The elves put the spider symbol around her neck so that Paks won't be harmed by this spider, who eats all the opponents Paks defeats. Gird's symbol is the crescent.

Answer: Her courage

Paks quickly discovers that she is frightened of practice fights, weapons, and even animals. She is too ashamed to stay at the grange where she can no longer fight, so she leaves, but keeps being dismissed from all the jobs she gets. The novel ends with her wandering the land, her whereabouts unknown to the Marshal-General.
