Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Lucas Davenport, what song should "any decent road trip start with"?

Answer: "Sharp-Dressed Man" - ZZ Top

"... as any intelligent person knows, any decent road trip will start with ZZ Top." - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford)

Lucas chose this for his number one song to start his list. Agree?
2. What song did Lucas put on his 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list twice?

Answer: Knockin' on Heaven's Door

"Yeah, yeah, I know it's on the list twice". - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford)

Bob Dylan's version is 42 and the one by Guns 'n Roses is 73.

I personally like the Eric Clapton version, but not all can be on the list.
3. How many artists have three songs on Lucas' 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list?

Answer: four

Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones and Guns 'n Roses all have three songs on the list.

If you think Eric Clapton should be included, one of his "three" was recorded with, and credited as, Eric and the Dominos.

Seven artists are double winners with two songs each on the list.
4. What is the only classical piece on the "100 Best Songs of the Rock Era" list?

Answer: "Jazz Suite No. 2: Waltz 2" composed by Dimitri Shostakovich

"Have you considered 'Waltz Two' from the Jazz Suite by Shostakovich?... Well I know you liked the music... You know, it was the theme music in 'Eyes Wide Shut,' when what's-her-face took her clothes off." - Weather Karkinnen (Lucas' wife) "Ah... that was a nice piece." - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford)

This is Lucas' last choice, number 100.
5. What artist is notably absent from Lucas' list of 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era?

Answer: Beatles

"When I get my bar, I'll want your list of songs. I'll put them on the jukebox." - Sloan. "No Beatles." - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford)

- - - - -

"Well, these are the one hundred best rock songs, okay? But there are no Beatles on the list. Don't you see? There are no Beatles..." - - Lonnie, the hospital patient who found Lucas' list after the shoot out. These are the very last lines of "Broken Prey".
6. In which song on Lucas' 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list is Brenda Lee "coming on strong"?

Answer: "Radar Love" - Golden Earring

"... I think I'm just about set, and then I'll hear something I completely forgot about, like 'Radar Love,' I mean that's gotta go on the list." - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford) Chosen for number six.

"The radio is playing some forgotten song,
Brenda Lee's 'Coming on Strong'" - line from "Radar Love. "Coming On Strong" is a Brenda Lee recording from 1966.

This is MY personal choice for the greatest rock song of all time, recorded in 1973 by the Dutch Band Golden Earring. This song is about a guy on a road trip and his girl back home sending messages to each other via mental telepathy, hence "Radar Love." If written today, the song would be called "Cell Phone Love." ;c) The full song with the drum intro and ending is not heard much. It is one of the most difficult songs for a drummer. It "takes a bit of lateral thinking to get your head around the math." - SongFacts/Fish, London UK.
7. Which Bruce Springsteen song was not chosen for Lucas' 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list?

Answer: Born in the USA

Bruce's three are: Dancing In The Dark -15, Born To Run - 16 and Thunder Road - 17.

John Sandford caused a bit of a stir by having Lucas write this list. Bloggers debated the list, what was included and omitted, some writing, "What was he thinking?" I am sure there are a few who thought it was unpatriotic to leave "Born in the USA" off the list.
8. Which Janis Joplin classic made the 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list?

Answer: Me and Bobby McGee

Janis' hitchhiking song ranks number 29. Why Lucas chose this particular Janis Joplin tune may have been influenced by his profession of pursuing serial killers.

"Travelers were nightmares. They might kill for a lifetime and never get caught; one woman disappearing every month or so, most of them never found, buried in the woods or the mountains or the desert, no track to follow, nobody to pull the pieces together. 'But real travelers tend to hide their victims, wnd that's why you never hear much about them. This guy is advertising.'" - Lucas Davenport. ("Broken Prey" by John Sandford)
9. Whose version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" did Lucas choose for his 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list?

Answer: The Byrds

While all four artists have popular recordings of the song it is The Byrds version that made number 85 on Lucas' list. Lucas' fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan wrote it - he was born as Robert Zimmerman in Duluth and grew up in Hibbing.
10. Of the nine songs on the 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era list with a color in the title, which one is black?

Answer: "Black Water" - Doobie Brothers

"Black Water" charts at number 30 on the list. Other colorful songs are composed of white, brown, red, blue, and purple. No Raspberry (Beret), no Green (Green Grass, as suggested by his friend Sloan) and since no Beatles, no Yellow (Submarine).
