Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Midwestern State does Lucas Davenport live and the crimes he solves take place?

Answer: Minnesota

While many of the novels center around the Minneapolis and St Paul area, others happen in various small Minnesota towns.
Living in Arizona, I always find it amusing that these states are classified as being in the 'Midwest', especially as they are all east of the Continental divide.
2. Although Lucas Davenport is the primary protagonist in all of the 'Prey' books, he sometimes gets help from another officer, one who likes to fish and loves his boat. What is his rather colorful name?

Answer: Virgil Flowers

Virgil Flowers is based outside of the Minneapolis and St Paul area and is a bachelor who loves the outdoors and his fishing boat. He is younger than Lucas and is considered somewhat of a ladies man, having been married 3 times.
Outside of the 'Prey' series there are several other Sandford books where Virgil is the primary character.
3. Lucas sometimes uses his personal vehicle when rushing to a crime scene. Having quite a pedigree, what type of car is this?

Answer: Porsche

Lucas has a Porsche 911 which he loves to drive. He also dresses in expensive clothes and wears Italian shoes. As he is independently wealthy, he somewhat stands out from the other law enforcement personnel.
4. Unlike most law enforcement detectives, Lucas is fairly wealthy and likes expensive clothes. How did he come by his fortune?

Answer: Sold his software company

Lucas was originally a software developer and developed both role-playing games and emergency simulation software for the police and other emergency workers. Early on, he sold his software company and focused on his crime fighting career.
5. Lucas has an adopted daughter who owned a single shot .22 rifle, with which she once shot a crooked cop in the chest. What is her rather uncommon name, containing a double consonant?

Answer: Letty

Letty was adopted by Lucas after her mother was murdered. Although a bright girl, she was a poor and somewhat wild child who used to hunt with her .22 rifle. Lucas taught her to shoot pistols and in the book 'Stolen Prey' she actually ended up shooting a couple of assassins. The name, shortened from Leticia, means joy or happiness.
6. Lucas works for an agency under the direction of the State's 'Department of Public Safety'. Arriving on a crime scene he is often heard identifying his agency. What is this group's three-letter initialism and corresponding name?

Answer: BCA - Bureau of Criminal Apprehension

Although the series originally started out with Davenport working for a Metropolitan Police department, he was eventually forced out and subsequently found employment at the State level, working for his old boss, Rose Marie.
7. Although early on he was a womanizer, Lucas is married to a doctor who has been a featured character in several 'Prey' books which chronicle their sometimes stormy relationship. What is her name?

Answer: Weather

Weather is a plastic surgeon who helps individuals who've been scarred or have deformities. She once saved Davenport's life and has been a main character in several of the 'Prey' books.
8. In which collegiate sport, playing for the Golden Gophers, did Lucas get a chipped tooth?

Answer: Hockey

Lucas wasn't the best skater but he was a tough hockey player who often got into fights on the ice. He also has a facial scar caused by a fishhook. In the early books, he was a lady's man, as women found him and his blue eyes quite attractive.
9. Of the titles listed below, which one is not a John Sandford 'Prey' novel?

Answer: Children who are Prey

Almost all the 'Prey' titles are only two words in length. The only exception is a couple in which the word 'of' is also used, such as in 'Eyes of Prey'.
Some of the other 'Prey' titles are: 'Naked Prey', 'Night Prey', 'Mind Prey', 'Sudden Prey', 'Buried Prey' and many more similar names.
10. During his career Lucas has sometimes had a mental health issue that affected his well-being. Which one of these was it?

Answer: Depression

Although not mentioned in most of the books, Lucas would sometimes go into a depressive state. No doubt the everyday trauma he experienced as a cop and the men he killed contributed to this tendency. However, it seems that a new case would always get him out of his 'funk'.
