#9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns Trivia Quiz

Answer: Death

The senior wizards at Unseen University wanted to know what was causing disruptions on the Discworld. The chaos had escalated to the point where the wizards' only option was to summon Death (and no wizard wants to attract his attention if they can help it). Death explained that Rincewind was causing the disruptions as he tried to get back to the Disc.

Answer: Dungeon Dimensions

Rincewind became trapped in the Dungeon Dimensions at the end of 'Sourcery'. It was not a good place for a wizard to be, and at the beginning of 'Eric' he was trying his hardest to escape. Getting out alive was a 'million to one chance'. Luckily, on the Discworld, million-to-one chances happen nine times out of ten.

Eric, a teenage demonologist, attempted to summon a demon from the Dungeon Dimensions. Unfortunately for him, he ended up with Rincewind.

Answer: 4

Rincewind kept telling Eric that he wasn't a demon, but the boy didn't believe him. The wizard (being as terrible at his craft as it were possible to be) didn't think he would be able to give Eric the things he wanted. Eric briefly began to come round to the truth, but then the Luggage appeared out of thin air. The storage item made of sapient pearwood would follow its master wherever he went - including to the Dungeon Dimensions and back again.

Eric had three main requests, then added a chest of gold, 'just to be going on with'.

Answer: Astfgl

The demons had come up with an ingenious plan. When Eric succeeded in opening a door between the Disc and the Dungeon Dimensions, Duke Vassenego was supposed to go through. When the portal actually opened, however, Rincewind beat him to it.

Eric was under the impression that summoning a demon would give him power and control. Wizards never bothered with demonology, though. Any power that lay in demonology belonged to the demons.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a village in Wales, and is the longest place name in Britain.

Answer: The four characters ended up in space looking down on the Discworld.

Rincewind began to question whether he had died and become a demon. Usually, when he snapped his fingers, nothing happened. This time was different. Rincewind appeared in space, floating over the Discworld with Eric, his parrot, and the Luggage. Eric had demanded mastery over every kingdom in the world. He looked down and asked, 'Can I have all of it?'

Answer: Sacrifice him

The Tezuman had a prophecy about the ruler of the world. The tribe had lived in a swampy jungle with limited natural resources (besides stone) and had a pretty awful god. They wanted to punish the person they believed to be behind the whole affair.

Eric had wished to be the ruler of the world and now he was getting exactly what he wished for...

Answer: A horse

Eric wished to meet the most beautiful woman who had ever lived. When Rincewind clicked his fingers, the boy got what he wished for. The wizard and the amateur demonologist were teleported back in time to the Tsortean Wars. They tumbled out of a (humorously placed) hatch in a wooden horse and found themselves encircled by soldiers.

Answer: Elenor of Tsort

Eric and Rincewind - along with Lavaeolus, the creator of the wooden horse - used a secret passage to reach Elenor of Tsort. Eric failed to be specific about his wish and Elenor was older than he had expected. Well, it had been a long time since she had been captured! She'd even had a few children during the siege.

Answer: The creation of the universe

The pair soon realised that 'living forever' meant existing from the creation of the universe right up to its final end. Rincewind and Eric appeared at the beginning of time, just before the Big Bang (which could have been a Big Hiss). They met one of the creators, who produced an egg and cress sandwich for Rincewind while they waited for everything to happen.

Answer: Hell

There had been a mutiny in Hell. Vassenego had gathered support while Astfgl had been on a mission to find Rincewind. The new king was awarded a 'promotion' to Supreme Life President of Hell. He set off on an eternity of bureaucracy while Vassenego took over the real running of things. Rincewind and Eric were allowed to escape from Hell along a road paved with good intentions.
