Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Police Constable David Shelby renowned for?

Answer: Being a womaniser

We are introduced to Police Constable David Shelby in this novel as a twenty-five year-old man, married with two young children, but also a hopeless womaniser.
2. Mr Allen is a rival for Mr Frosts' career prospects. Mr Allen holds the rank of Detective Inspector.

Answer: True

Jack Frost is also a Detective Inspector, and in this novel the two men constantly vie for the dominant place of power in the rank system.
3. 'In his late forties, he had a weather-beaten face flecked with freckles, his balding head fringed with light-brown fluffy hair.' This quote from the novel describes whom?

Answer: Detective Inspector Jack Frost

Accustomed to watching the television series, I was rather surprised to hear Jack Frost's hair as being described as light brown opposed to the infamously viewed grey on television! A note to remember that this novel was only BASED upon the television series, and not centred wholly upon it.
4. Frost knows Doctor Slomon because he used to nurse his wife.

Answer: False

Doctor Cadman was the man who nursed Frost's wife when she was ill. Doctor Slomon is the police station's doctor.
5. Unfortunate Police Sergeant Wells ends up manning the entire police station during a station party, but what is his first name?

Answer: Bill

Police Sergeant Bill Wells was outraged at being one of the few men made to work whilst the rest of the entire station was at the station party!
6. Where is the novel set?

Answer: Denton

Denton Division is the home to the infamous characters DI Jack Frost and Mr Mullett!
7. What rank is Frost's sidekick Webster?

Answer: Detective Constable

Detective Constable was once Detective Inspector Webster, but lost his Inspector name after a dispute in the ranks and hitting his commander Mr Mullett.
8. Similar to the chicken and the egg, what came first...'A Touch of Frost' by R.D.Wingfield or the television series?

Answer: The novels by R.D.Wingfield

R.D.Wingfield is described as the creator of the TV series 'A Touch of Frost.' The novel of the same title states that the literary series was afterwards successfully adapted for television starring David Jason.
9. In the novel, Detective Inspector Jack Frost always insists on doing most of the driving whilst out with Webster.

Answer: False

Despite the car being Frost's own Cortina, he prefers to assert his dominance of rank over the fallen Inspector Webster by making Webster drive Frost everywhere in Frost's own car. Webster describes himself as being Mr Frost's 'personal chaffeur'.
10. And finally, both in the novel and on the television, Jack Frost is renowned for wearing which item of clothing?

Answer: A long dirty grey coat (macintosh)

The archetypal image of Jack Frost is of him in his coat, smoking a cigarette - this image is consistent with both the novel and the television series!
