Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The widow of Richard's brother, Leo; she was hit over the head when she tried to convey to Mr Entwhistle what it was that struck her as incongruous after Richard's funeral.

Answer: Helen Abernethie

Mr Entwhistle told Helen that Richard Abernethie was very fond of her. Helen's husband, Leo, had been Richard's favourite brother. Richard greatly appreciated Helen's visits to him after Leo died.
2. The youngest of the Abernethie siblings; after the funeral, she made everyone uncomfortable by announcing, "But he was murdered, wasn't he?"

Answer: Cora Lansquenet

Cora was described as "given to blurting out remarks that had always better have remained unsaid". So after Richard's funeral, when Cora asked "But he was murdered, wasn't he?", and stated that it had "been hushed up very nicely", her family were a bit shocked at the social gaffe but did not take it seriously.

There was no evidence whatsoever that Richard's death was not natural...until Cora was murdered the following day.
3. Richard Abernethie's brother; a rude and selfish man who bitterly resented that he was not Richard's sole beneficiary.

Answer: Timothy Abernethie

Timothy was allegedly an invalid but Mr Entwhistle, Hercule Poirot, Richard, George and Susan were all of the opinion that he was just a hypochondriac. Timothy and his wife Maude did not have any children, so Timothy became Maude's "child". She catered to his hypochondria, thus enabling him to become more of an invalid than might otherwise be the case.
4. The daughter of Richard's brother, Gordon; as well as benefiting from Richard's will, she also inherited her aunt Cora's entire but meagre estate.

Answer: Susan Banks

Cora hardly knew her nieces Susan and Rosamund, or her nephew George, but left her entire estate to Susan. Mr Entwhistle speculated that this was because Susan "was reported to have made a marriage not wholly pleasing to the family", just as Cora had done.
5. The son of Richard's sister, Laura; he was a lawyer in dire financial straits due to speculation on the stock exchange, as well as his gambling habit, particularly betting on the horses.

Answer: George Crossfield

Rosamund told Poirot that she thought her cousin George was responsible for the deaths of Richard and Cora. She told Poirot that "George is a wrong'un, you know, he's mixed up in some sort of currency swindle - I heard about it from some friends of mine who were in Monte. I expect Uncle Richard got to know about it and was just going to cut him out of his will".
6. Daughter of Richard's sister, Geraldine; a beautiful actress who was described as a "lovely nitwit" who was "not conspicuous for brains".

Answer: Rosamund Shane

Susan told George that their cousin Rosamund was "not quite so dumb as one might think. She says things that are quite shrewd, sometimes. Things that you wouldn't have imagined she'd even noticed. It's - it's quite disconcerting". Just like their Aunt Cora!
7. A spinster who was Cora's paid companion and housekeeper; she almost died of poisoning by a piece of wedding cake laced with arsenic.

Answer: Miss Gilchrist

Miss Gilchrist (we do not learn her first name) was Cora's paid companion and housekeeper. She was most emphatic that she only did cooking, dusting and light housekeeping but "none of the rough". After Cora's death, Susan arranged for Miss Gilchrist to go to her Uncle Timothy and Aunt Maude's to help out when Maude broke her ankle.
8. An art expert and old friend of Cora's; he usually visited her once a year to evaluate her various acquisitions.

Answer: Alexander Guthrie

At Hercule Poirot's instigation, Mr Guthrie examined a painting that Cora had acquired and confirmed that it was, in fact, a valuable Vermeer.
9. The Abernethie family solicitor and very old friend of Richard Abernethie; he lives with his spinster sister who disapproves of him attending the funeral.

Answer: Mr Entwhistle

The American title of this novel is "Funerals are Fatal". It is derived from a remark by Mr Entwhistle's sister. She was not happy about her brother attending Richard Abernethie's funeral, telling him that "Funerals are absolutely fatal for a man of your age! You'll be taken off as suddenly as your precious Mr Abernethie was if you don't take more care of yourself."
10. Famous Belgian detective who was asked to investigate the deaths of Richard and Cora by Mr Entwhistle; he posed as "Monsieur Pontarlier" to infiltrate the family.

Answer: Hercule Poirot

Hercule Poirot posed as Monsieur Pontarlier, a representative of the fictional organisation UNARCO (United Nations Aid for Refugee Centres Organisation) in order to infiltrate the household and discreetly observe the family. He was exposed by Rosamund, who knew he was a detective because Poirot had been pointed out to her in a restaurant in the past.

When Poirot asked why she had delayed mentioning it to the family, she replied "I thought it would be more fun not to."
