Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Cat among the Pigeons", what is the name of the school, run by Miss Bulstrode?

Answer: Meadowbank

The story begins in Ramat, where there is government unrest. Bob Rawlinson, a pilot, tries to bring Prince Ali Yusef out of Ramat, but he fails when the plane crashes. Before making his escape, Bob held some jewels in his niece's tennis racquet. Then the teachers start being murdered at the well-known Meadowbank. Julia Upjohn finds the jewels in her best friend's tennis racquet, and asks for Poirot's help.
2. In "The Pale Horse", where does Mark Easterbrook witness a fight between two girls?

Answer: Coffee house

Mark Easterbrook is the main narrator in this novel. Ariadne Oliver also appears, but this time without Poirot. Rhoda Dawes, who appeared in "Cards on the Table", also makes reappearance, with her husband, Major Despard, who was in the same book. Mark discovers there is a business where you can arrange to have people "bumped off".

There are nine murders in this novel, all from thallium poisoning.
3. In "The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side", the first murder victim is killed by an overdose of Calmo, a sedative. But what was the Calmo hidden in?

Answer: Daiquiri cocktail

The title comes from Alfred Lord Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot". In 1980, Angela Lansbury - better known as Jessica Fletcher in "Murder She Wrote" - played Miss Marple in "The Mirror Crack'd", although she was far too young for the role. A murder occurs during a fête at Gossington Hall, and Miss Marple investigates with the help of Chief Inspector Craddock.
4. In "The Clocks", how many clocks are found in Miss Pebmarsh's house, which she declares do not belong to her?

Answer: 4

A secretary - Sheila Webb - is told to go on an assignment, to see Miss Pebmarsh, who is blind. There is nobody in the house except a dead man. Colin Lamb, a marine biologist, assists Sheila when she comes running out of the house. The four spare clocks are all set at 4.13. Hercule Poirot appears in this book as a friend of Colin's; Colin is presumed to be Superintendent Battle's son.
5. In "A Caribbean Mystery", what was unusual about Major Palgrave?

Answer: A false eye

Jason Rafiel is the one who is paralysed. He will reappear, contacting Miss Marple from beyond the grave, in "Nemesis". Miss Marple is holidaying on the Caribbean island of St. Honore, a gift from her nephew, Raymond West, and his wife. Major Palgrave is the usual English bore, with long rambling stories. During one of the stories to Miss Marple, he asks her if she would like to see a picture of a murderer. Soon after, Major Palgrave is found dead ...
6. In "At Bertram's Hotel", what sport was Ladislaus Malinowski well-known for?

Answer: Motor car racing

Miss Marple comes to stay at the well-known Bertram's Hotel in London. She stayed there when she was much younger. The strange thing is that the hotel doesn't seem to have changed in the least. We discover that criminals are using Bertram's as their base.
7. In "Third Girl", where does Norma Restarick live, with Claudia Reese-Holland and France Cary?

Answer: Borodene Mansions

A "third girl" is someone who shares a flat with two other girls. This is a much more modern Hercule Poirot novel, with people taking drugs etc. Ariadne Oliver assists Poirot again. Norma asks for Poirot's help; she is not sure if she murdered her stepmother or not.
8. In "Endless Night", what is Michael Rogers' job, when the story begins?

Answer: Chauffeur

This novel is narrated by Michael Rogers. There is no main detective. He falls in love with American heiress, Ellie Guteman. They soon marry, and come to live at Gipsy's Acre. It is rumoured that Gipsy's Acre was cursed by gypsies, who were forced to leave the area. During the book, many accidents happen to Ellie. She later dies from a fall from a horse.
9. In "By the Pricking of my Thumbs", what is the nursing home called, where Tommy Beresford's Aunt Ada is a resident?

Answer: Sunny Ridge

Aunt Ada dies soon after Tommy and Tuppence have paid her a visit. Another resident at the nursing home gave Aunt Ada a painting, which the Beresfords inherit. Tuppence is intrigued by the painting, and is sure she has seen the house before.
10. In "Hallowe'en Mystery", where has Superintendent Spence retired to?

Answer: Woodleigh Common

All the other places have also been mentioned in Christie's novels. Ariadne Oliver helps out at a Hallowe'en party, held by Rowena Drake, for young children and teenagers. One of the children, Joyce Reynolds, is soon found drowned in a tub of water, which was being used for bobbing for apples. Mrs Oliver begs Poirot to help find out who killed Joyce. Superintendent Spence also assists Poirot and Mrs Oliver. Superintendent Spence was also in "Mrs McGinty's Dead" ("Blood Will Tell").
