Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one to begin with - what are the names of the two children in the books?

Answer: Susan and Colin

Lucy, Peter and Edmund are characters from C.S.Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia.
2. The Weirdstone of Brisingamen itself has been in the girl's family for generations. She calls it her....what?

Answer: Tear

As well as her "Tear" and the "Weirdstone of Brisingamen", the stone is also known as "Firefrost"
3. Both the stories are set near to a Cheshire town and hill, both of which have the same name. Which is...?

Answer: Alderley Edge

Striding Edge and Swirral Edge are features on Helvellyn, a mountain in the Lake District, in Cumbria. Nether Edge is an area of Sheffield, in Yorkshire
4. The magician Cadellin, has a nickname amongst the people who know him - ie "Cadellin xxxxxxxx". What is it?

Answer: Silverbrow

Silverside is a cut of beef, Jay Silverheels was the name of the actor who played Tonto in the TV series The Lone Ranger, and Silverlode is the name of a stream in The Lord of the Rings.
5. What is the name of the hill where everyone tries to meet up with Cadellin, in the final scenes of "The Weirdstone of Brisingamen"?

Answer: Shutlingsloe

Shutlingsloe (that appears to be the most favoured spelling) is also known as the Cheshire Matterhorn. From one direction, it is a spectacular point, while from another it appears to be a fairly nondescript ridge. It makes for a good walk, though. The others are all hills in the Peak District, either in Cheshire or Derbyshire.
6. By what Celtic name is Selina Place, or Shapeshifter, known?

Answer: The Morrigan

She is one of the most intriguing characters in the books. It is never quite clear just what she is - a human witch, some sort of supernatural being (her head returns to her shoulders when chopped off by Uthecar the dwarf) or what? And she nearly always refers to herself in the plural - "our teeth have long rusted seeking your flesh".
7. When the girl in the story is "possessed" by the Brollachan in "the Moon of Gomrath", her brother tries to stop her falling off a cliff - but what does he feel when he tries to grab her hand?

Answer: A hoof

The Brollachan is an entity that takes over other bodies, then discards them when they are damaged by the mere fact of its presence. The memory of its previous shape lingers for a while - before Susan, it took over a black pony - hence the hoof.
8. In "The Moon of Gomrath", when the children wake the Wild Hunt, how many separate groups of horsemen, of varying numbers from 1 to 3, are woken up to ride with the Hunt. Exclude the Hunter himself (he isn't a horseman - he runs).

Answer: 5

In Alan Garner's notes at the end of "The Moon of Gomrath" he says that amongst the names that have been given the Hunter are Herm and Francis Drake!
9. Many of the sites and places mentioned in these two books actually exist in the Area. But which of these does not appear in the books?

Answer: The Stone of Erech

The Stone of Erech is where Aragorn deals with the Dead in "The Lord of the Rings".
10. Which character in the books does Alan Garner say is based on a real person, a Mr Joshua Rowbotham Birtles?

Answer: Gowther Mossock

It's quite unusual for an author to do this - but he says Mr Birtles was "unruffled" by being put into the book.
