Authors D-G: 'G' Trivia Questions

1. Starting on Empire Day eight years after Palpatine's rise to power, "Lost Stars" follows the lives of Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree. Both of them live on which planet in the Outer Rim?

From Quiz
"Lost Stars" by Claudia Gray

Answer: Jelucan

Thane and Ciena both live on the remote planet of Jelucan, a cold, mountainous world at the edge of the Outer Rim. Thane and his brother Dalven, sons of Oris and Ganaire Kyrell, are part of a second wave of settlers to colonize on Jelucan, and lead relatively modern lives by Galactic standards. Conversely, Ciena, daughter of Paron and Verine Ree, is part of the first group of people to settle on Jelucan. Her ancestors were exiled from their home after their king was overthrown and they refused to bow down to the new ruler. They settled in the valleys of Jelucan, and, in homage to their fallen king, live a life lacking in modern comforts. To the first wave settlers, honor and loyalty are the most important aspects of their existence, and to break an oath of loyalty or a promise is the most unspeakable thing a person can do.

2. The novel opens with a burial. Who is in the casket?

From Quiz "Five Little Indians" by Michelle Good

We learn that it is Lily in the casket, a young girl who died years ago at the Mission residential school. Clara is haunted by the death of Lily and the women are relieved that they have been able to bring her body home.

5. The main character from the "Poldark" series of historical novels obtained a facial scar after fighting during which war?

Captain Ross Poldark was a British redcoat who served during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) for three years until his return to Cornwall in 1783. 7. How was Jane Goodall able to become involved in animal research?

From Quiz "In The Shadow of Man"

Answer: Louis Leakey chose her after she became an assistant secretary in his museum office.

Jane writes that she was always interested in animals. Her mother gave her a toy chimpanzee, named Jubilee, when she was a year old. Jubilee was her favorite companion, and she still has the toy! When visiting a friend in Kenya, she was told that if she really was interested in animals, she should meet Dr. Leakey. At the time he was curator of the National Museum in Nairobi. He gave her a job as an assistant secretary, which eventually led to an invitation to participate in the Leakey's paleontological dig at the Olduvai Gorge. Jane believed she was chosen because of her lack of formal education; she would begin the study with a completely unbiased belief, with a real desire to acquire knowledge. All she needed was patience and perseverance! Later, Leakey insisted that Jane attend university in England, primarily because he believed a degree would given her findings more validity, and help her face less criticism from the scientific community.

9. Which type of shop does Lourdes own in Brooklyn?

From Quiz Dreaming in Cuban

Answer: Bakery

Celia del Pino spends the night watching the sea with her binoculars for any signs of invasion. From her balcony in the year 1972, she is the first line of defense of any enemy forces (as appointed by her neighbourhood). Since her house on the coast of Northern Cuba overlooks the ocean, she has the ideal vantage point. During her surveillance on this night she sees a light on the water and the ghost of her husband walks to the edge of the beach saying something she can't quite hear and radiating an eerie light. By the time she rushes to meet him at the water's edge, he disappears. Celia decides to wade through the shallow waters at the shore while she remembers her husband, who went to the United States (where he passed away) not too long ago. She also thinks about her granddaughter, Pilar, who has resided in New York City, as an artist, for years. She finds herself wading too deep and returns to shore to await the returning fishing boats. One of Celia's children, Felicia, arrives at the house and discovers that her mother has gone swimming. Celia tells her to send a telegram to Javier, her son in Prague, to state that his father has died after four years in New York City. After work, Felicia drives to her best friend Hermanita's house where the two of them sacrifice a goat to their gods. Another of Celia's daughters, Lourdes, heads to work at her Brooklyn bakery before sunrise. Before the bakery opens she receives a call from a nun who has been attending to her father. She states that she witnessed him, in full health, walk through the wall and to the East River radiating a blue light. That afternoon, Lourdes closes the shop early and visits the hospital at which her father passed away to view the body. Upon returning home, already in an emotional state, she is also unable to locate her daughter, Pilar, and assumes she is missing. She calls the police, hospitals, fire station, and radio stations to ensure that she is found.

10. When Leo first notices a change in his wife, Rema, and believes that she is someone she is not, what type of animal does she bring home?

From Quiz Atmospheric Disturbances

Answer: Puppy

Leo awakens from a migraine-induced daze to find a woman who looks exactly like, and behaves identically to, his wife Rema, walking in with a puppy, an animal which she normally has no inclination towards. Somehow, Leo knows this is not his wife - he has a feeling that something is different. Leo, a psychiatrist, is forced to leave in the middle of the night to attend to a patient in the psychiatric ER and he leaves his wondering for later. Arriving at the hospital where both he and his wife work (he as a doctor and she as a translator), Leo is simply confused and his mind keeps swaying back to the issue of his possible impostor wife. Nevertheless, someone has been brought in, presumably his patient, Harvey, and presumably missing a 'stolen leg'. He decides to check some files. Harvey is a peculiar fellow who, apparently, disappeared a couple of days before Rema was replaced by a fake. When Harvey first came to Leo he had schizotypal personality disorder and believed that he was a secret agent for the Royal Academy of Meteorology. His duty: control the weather and proliferate the randomness of the elements to prevent opposing groups from taking advantage of weather fronts in this and other parallel worlds. Knowing the weather is power. Harvey claims to only control small bouts of wind, though. Small fry. His father, apparently, was also a member of this elite weather-controlling group, but he was abducted and sent to another world. Of course, months ago, Leo was persuaded by Rema to lie to Harvey (unethically) and claim he was a higher rank in the Royal Academy of Meteorology. This plan works and prevents Harvey from leaving the area.
