Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. James ate many meals in the kitchens of the farmers who were some of his clients. He always described the people as generous and hospitable, and the food as satisfying and delicious, especially after all his hard work. However, on one occasion he was served something which he found utterly revolting and could barely bring himself to eat it - what was it?

Answer: Bacon fat

It was cold and congealed, and he was given two thick slices. James was always finicky about fat, and after having to choke down such a quantity of something which nauseated him so badly his loathing of fat became almost paranoid! Who could blame him?
2. James did not want to appear impolite by refusing a meal he was served by a friendly farmer's wife - even though he found the dish she served utterly disgusting! What did James have to smother it with in order to force it down?

Answer: Spicy relish

"And you like ma Piccalilli too - you finished the whole jar!"
3. Tristan once took over the cooking at Skeldale House, assuring Siegfried that he was very good at cooking a certain dish. However, he failed to mention that it was the ONLY dish he could cook, and as it appeared on the dining table day after day after day Siegfried's patience (and appetite) completely evaporated. What was the dish?

Answer: Sausage and mashed potatoes

This was another hilarious example of an exasperated Siegfried completely losing it. Tristan unbelievably kept serving up sausage and mash - over and over and over! Too bad they couldn't just get some take-out...
4. Mr Crump served James a wide variety of his homemade wines, which James found both unique and delicious. What was one of the unusual types of wine they tried?

Answer: Cowslip

Mrs Crump scolded her husband for pestering people to try his wines, but James loved it and his obvious enjoyment seemed to fill Mr Crump with pride - and of course, the two of them became downright pie-eyed as they sampled his concoctions.
5. When James first met Granville Bennett, he was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of food and drink forced upon him by his larger-than-life host, as was to be the case throughout their friendship - much to his chagrin. What did Granville stuff him with?

Answer: Beer, whiskey, pickled onions, enormous roast beef sandwiches

And this was just Granville's idea of a little snack! Unfortunately for James, this scenario was to be replayed many times over the years - Granville charmingly plying him with shocking quantities of food and drink, and James too polite to refuse. He was inevitably left feeling sick, drunk, and making embarrassing abdominal noises.
6. James was once summoned to see an urgent case - a dog had eaten rat poison. He hadn't brought any medicines with him in his hurry. What did he use to treat the dog?

Answer: Mustard

It worked, too.
7. After a couple of disappointing dates, Helen kindly invited James over for Sunday tea with her family. She put on quite a vast spread. James was amazed and impressed by her skill as a cook, as well as her good looks. What was NOT on the menu that day?

Answer: Blueberry pie

It's no wonder that James began to put on weight after they got married!
8. When Helen was pregnant with their first child, what food couldn't she get enough of?

Answer: Custard

He would always see her with a spoon in her hand. Along with the cravings, she began to complain of "funny smells" which led them on a long search for a place to eat that didn't "smell funny". Pregnancy is a funny thing.
9. James discovered an interesting food combination favoured by locals at the holidays, and learned that when eaten boldly together at once it tasted quite good. What was it?

Answer: Fruitcake, cheese, and whisky

Maybe it tasted better after a few whiskys!
10. Visits to examine Mrs Pumphrey's Pekingese were a luxurious departure from his more typical trips to barns and pastures, as she (and her pet!) loved to pamper "Uncle Herriot". What drink did Mrs Pumphrey always have waiting for him after the examination?

Answer: Sherry

He was always careful to time his visits for half an hour before lunch, so the sherry made a nice aperitif.
