Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does this book take place?

Answer: Wales

The Welsh characters in "Hood" actually prefer to be called "British."
The French are known as "Ffrenic", and most English are called "Saxons."
2. What relation is Brychan ap Tewder to Bran?

Answer: His father

Brychan ap Tewder is the king of Elfael, the little Welsh kingdom overrun by the Ffrenic. He is killed by Ffrenic on his way to swear allegiance to the king of England. He is Bran's father, and thus, Bran is next in line to become the king.
The Cymry (or British) give surnames by attaching the father's name to the first name. Thus, Bran ap Brychan means "Bran of Brychan" or "Son of Brychan."
3. What is the name of the king of the nearby kingdom?

Answer: Cadwgan

He is a friend of Bran's father, but often scolds him for his selfish and mean-spiritedness. He does not approve of Bran in any way, shape or form.
4. Bran's mother is alive.

Answer: False

Queen Rhian died in the beginning of the book. She was very sick. Because she loved to hunt, Bran went out to hunt for her, dedicating the prize to his mother. After the queen died, Bran stopped enjoying the hunt.
5. What is the name of Bran's savior?

Answer: Angharad

Angharad finds Bran lying wounded in the forest and takes him to her cave in the woods. She heals him, and nurses him back to health.

6. Angharad is a beautiful young maiden.

Answer: False

Angharad is described as and ugly old crone with a hunched back. Her true beauty is revealed when she sings. Her voice is beautiful and magical. She eventually becomes Bran's good friend.
7. Iwan and Aethelfrith give each other these names

Answer: Little John & Friar Tuck

Yep, this story is a fantastic version of Robin Hood.

Iwan is Bran's best friend and warrior. When Bran's father is killed in a Ffrenic battle, Iwan races to tell Bran and save the village.

Aethelfrith is a Saxon priest who offers Bran and his friends shelter on their way to Lunedain.
8. Who was the current king of England, France, and (most of) Wales?

Answer: William the Red

Time for a history lesson.
William the Conqueror forced Harold to swear an oath that William could be king when the old king died. Well, when that happened, Harold decided that he didn't want to let Will be king and he refused to give him the throne. William didn't appreciate Harold going back on his word, so, to teach Harold a lesson, Will started a war. And then he won the war. Harold died, and Will had a son with red hair who was then named "William the Red."

King Caxel is the king from Jessica Day George's "Dragon Slippers."
9. Who takes over Elfael?

Answer: Count Falkes de Braose

Count Falkes takes over Elfael on behalf of his uncle, Baron de Braose.
He forces them to work at building a town, thus leading to the starvation of the commot, as they cannot gather in their crops.

Baron Nuefmarche offers aid to the bishop of the abey in Elfael. He doesn't send it at first, but he later makes up for it by sending double.
10. Finally... What is Bran's OFFICIAL title as lord of the forest?

Answer: Rhi Bran y Hud

Rhi Bran y Hud, literally translated means: King Raven the Enchanter. It is the Cymry language. When Bran becomes King Raven to get his kingdom back from the Ffrenic, said Ffrenic are terrified and sure he is an evil spirit.
