Shrewsbury Abbey was home to monks of the Benedictine order.

Cadfael had a "girlfriend" before he left for the Crusades, Richildis, who appears in "Monk's Hood". He also conceived a child with Mariam: "The Virgin in the Ice" tells us of their romance.
