Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This book was set in England in 1139 at a time when civil war tore the country in two. In the midst of the fighting two orphans and a nun fled towards Shrewsbury to escape the terror and destruction. What town were these three fleeing from?

Answer: Worcester

Many people fled the fighting in Worcester to seek a safe haven in more secure places like Shrewsbury. The Abbey infirmary quickly filled and straw was laid down in the corridors for the excess. A large number of towns were besieged and captured, some multiple times, by both King Stephen and Empress Maud as they fought for the throne of England.
2. Hugh Beringar, deputy sheriff of Shrewsbury, is a close friend of Cadfael's and works with him to solve a great many murders. What was Hugh Beringar given by his wife, Aline, shortly before he left to follow Cadfael?

Answer: A son

On the day that Cadfael departed from Shrewsbury, Aline Beringar gave birth to a son, whom they named Giles after Aline's brother who died in "One Corpse Too Many". The pregnant girl from Worcester, whom they had taken into their home, also gave birth to a son one day later.

In later books we learn that Cadfael was named as godfather to Giles Beringar and is given leave to visit him occasionally.
3. On arrival at Lord Boteral's manor, Brother Cadfael and his companions find most of the household dead and Boteral recovering from a sharp fever brought on by a stab wound received on the night on the attack. Who gave Lord Boteral his injury?

Answer: Ermina Hugonin

Lord Boteral claimed a bandit stabbed him in the course of the battle as he defended his people but Ermina later revealed that this was not true. Boteral did not defend his people; he fled with Ermina to Ledwyche. Boteral realised he would lose the lands he stood to gain from Ermina's dowry when she refused to marry a coward so he made to rape her.

As he went to grab her, Ermina, realising his intentions, stabbed him with her dagger before fleeing into the forest.
4. Sister Hilaria fled with the two orphans towards Shrewsbury. Sadly she never made it. Her two charges were both found safe and well but by the time Sister Hilaria was found it was too late. Where was Sister Hilaria found?

Answer: In a frozen brook

Sister Hilaria's body was stripped and dumped in a freezing brook with the hope she would be counted among the many who had died at the hands of the bandits, which she had not. She was attacked and killed in a shepherd's hut but then her body was moved to hide what had been done.
5. Right from when the body was first discovered we, as the readers, were allowed to believe the body to be Ermina Hugonin. Brother Cadfael, however, suspected right from when he first saw the body clearly that it was not Yves' sister at all. How did Cadfael know that body was not Ermina Hugonin?

Answer: Her hair

As the body thawed, Brother Cadfael noticed that the girl had short golden brown hair. Ermina was said to be of dark complexion with long black hair. Since there was no reason for Ermina to have cut her hair and the body was of a paler complexion, it stood to reason that the body was not that of Ermina Hugonin.
6. When Brother Elyas had a fit of distress and fled into the snowy night, Yves Hugonin followed to care for the ill brother. After spending the night in a hut, Yves awoke to the sound of horses and ran out hoping for rescue. Instead he found himself taken prisoner. What was the name of the man in charge of the gang that took Yves prisoner?

Answer: Alain le Gaucher

Alain le Gaucher was the bandit chief who yelled at Hugh Beringar, the deputy sheriff, to back off or he would kill Yves. Yves pretended to be a shepherd's boy to protect himself and Brother Elyas but le Gaucher knew he was not a shepherd's boy but of a noble family. Olivier de Bretagne rescued Yves and fought le Gaucher eventually killing him.
7. Once Yves Hugonin was safe and the bandit chief dead, Hugh Beringer asked him what the name of his rescuer was. Yves gave the answer he was taught to give. What did Yves say his rescuer's name was?

Answer: Robert

When finally safe, Yves told Hugh Beringar and Cadfael that it was Robert, the forester's son, who had managed to climb up the tower and rescue him. This was the same Robert who brought Ermina safe to the abbey but he was no forester's son.
8. Once captured, Yves sought a way to leave a clear trail behind him so he may be followed by rescuers. What was it that Yves left a trail of for Cadfael to follow?

Answer: Red wine

Yves found that the pony he was tied to carried to large goatskins of wine, one of which he stabbed with the large pin from his cloak. This caused a small leak of bright red wine to splatter on the ground, clear in the white snow and very easy for anyone to follow.
9. While they were trapped up on the tower Olivier taught Yves that, when asked who his rescuer was, he should give a false name. Olivier also disappeared as soon as the bandit chief was dead. Why didn't Olivier want to be met by Hugh Beringar?

Answer: He supported Empress Maud

This book was set in 1139 at which time King Stephen and his cousin Empress Maud were fighting over the throne causing civil war. Olivier de Bretagne supports the Empress while Hugh Beringar supports King Stephen. As Deputy Sheriff of an area held by the King, Hugh would have taken Olivier as a prisoner of war if they had met.
10. Like most of Ellis Peters' books, "The Virgin in the Ice" is full of twists and turns leaving the reader wondering what will happen next and sometimes even giving the reader a bit of a surprise. The readers aren't always the only ones to get a surprise though. At the end of the book Brother Cadfael gets a surprise himself. What does Cadfael learn at the end of the book that stuns him?

Answer: He has a son

While waiting for a safe time to get the children safely away, Olivier sits and talks to Cadfael about himself. On hearing that Olivier's mother was a woman named Mariam who lived in Antioch and that Olivier's father was a simple man-at-arms who sailed from St Symeon never knowing that he had left behind a son, Cadfael realised that he was Olivier's father. Cadfael chose not to tell Olivier what he had just discovered and Olivier left with the children, oblivious to the father he left behind.
