Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the graphic novel that Clay has written?

Answer: Dark Wanderer

Clay had a meeting in Boston to try and sell his graphic novel. This means he is a long way from his home and family when the 'pulse' hits.
2. When the first wave of the 'pulse' hits, what is Clay waiting to buy?

Answer: Ice cream

He hears the Mr Softee truck playing the theme tune from "Sesame Street" and decides to buy an ice cream to kill time until he is able to call Sharon. The paperweight has already been purchased by Clay as a gift for Sharon.
3. Clay meets up with Tom and Alice and between them they decide to go back to Tom's house in Malden. What item does Alice find in Malden that she becomes emotionally attached to and carries with her almost continuously throughout the rest of the story?

Answer: Baby Nike

The tiny shoe is pink and purple. She ties the laces round her wrist and wears it like a bracelet. It becomes almost a talisman for her and she uses it to help her cope with everything that has been happening.
4. Alice and Tom agree to travel with Clay back to his home in Kent Pond in Maine. While travelling they encounter a professor and student from Gaiten Academy. Professor Ardai and Jordan tell them they have to see something. What is it that they want to show them?

Answer: A soccer field full of sleeping phoners

The phoners are all lying on the soccer field. They look to be asleep but Jordan later explains how he believes they are rebooting like computers. When they are lying in the field, the phoners are completely unresponsive and Professor Ardai tries to convince the travellers that it would be easy just to soak them all in gasoline and burn them all.
5. After being unable to procure enough gasoline to soak the phoners, what idea does the group them come up with?

Answer: Driving some full tankers onto the field from a nearby petrol station

Clay and Tom drive the tankers onto the field while the phoners are out foraging. Once they are all rebooting, they use the .45 to blow the tankers up.
6. After the incident on the soccer field, Clay and Jordan dream of The Raggedy Man. He is presenting the group to the rest of the phoners and calling them insane. He does not speak aloud but is heard telepathically. What else is strange about what he says?

Answer: He speaks in Latin

The Raggedy Man speaks in Latin to the crowd. He says that they are insane and the crowd respond 'don't touch!'. When the group meet some 'normies' on the road a couple of days later, it becomes apparent that as designated 'flock killers' the normies want nothing to do with them. They have been promised sanctuary in Kashwak by The Raggedy Man.
7. The group set out again for Kent Pond. On the way the group encounters Gunner and his crew who make a game of speeding around in cars trying to avoid all the jammed cars. They have been hurt in an accident and Alice offers to help them but they refuse saying they are untouchable. Later that day, Alice is killed by Gunner. How does he do it?

Answer: Throws a rock at the group as they drive past

The group of travellers have mostly forgotten about Gunner and his crew. They drive past and Gunner throws the rock and caves in the side of Alice's head. She dies on the roadside and they bury her with her Baby Nike.
8. When the group finally reach Kent Pond, Clay finds a message from his son telling him that the survivors have gone to Kaskwak. What does he tell Clay about Sharon?

Answer: That his mom is a phoner

Johnny sees his mom flocking with the phoners and understands she has gone and needs to warn Clay in case he sees her. Johnny's notes are very sweet.
9. After leaving Kent Pond they run into another group of 'flock killers'. Dan says he has been told to show the group something. What is it?

Answer: The bodies of Gunner and one of his crew

Gunner and one of his crew were forced to kill themselves as retribution for killing one of the 'untouchables'. The Raggedy Man made them do it as an example to others.
10. The others all decide they are not going to go with Clay and he strikes out on his own to go to Kashwak. The others soon catch up with him however. Why do they come back?

Answer: The phoners hacked into their brains and forced them to come back

The phoners were not pleased the group had split up and got inside the minds of the others and forced them to re-join Clay on his way to Kashwak. They arrived in a schoolbus.
11. The group travel onwards to Kashwak together. They make a stop and Ray wanders off under the pretext of needing the toilet. He calls for Clay and when he arrives he takes Clay's gun and shoots himself. What object does he give Clay before he takes his gun?

Answer: A cell phone

He gives Clay a cell phone and a number and tells him he will have to work out what it means. He then kills himself so the phoners can't get his plan from his thoughts.
12. The group arrive at Kashwak and Clay realises that Ray has filled the bus with explosives rigged to a cell phone. The problem is that they are locked in. Jordan volunteers to squeeze out of the window. Clay tells him to move the bus near to the flock and then get behind the building. While Jordan is gone, what does Clay think he has lost?

Answer: The number for the cell phone

He looks for the number in the pocket with the cell phone but cannot find it. Denise eventually helps him locate it in the tiny watch pocket in his jeans.
13. While Clay was looking for the missing item, Jordan got to the bus and started driving. Where did he drive it?

Answer: Right on top of the phoner flock

He drives straight into the middle of the flock. He says he did it in honour of Professor Ardai. This means that when the bus explodes the damage is much greater.
14. The group again decide to split up as Clay is not ready to give up on Johnny. Where do the other say they are heading?

Answer: North towards Canada

They decide to travel North and hole up somewhere for Denise to have her baby. They agree to spray paint the way so Clay can follow them later.
15. Does Clay ever find his son Johnny?

Answer: Yes, but he has been changed

He does find Johnny but the phoner programming was incomplete. He will only sleep in tight spaces and has night terrors. Clay decides to see if Jordan's last theory is true. Will a second dose of the 'pulse' cause Johnny's brain to reboot and come back as he was before? Only one way for Clay to find out...
