Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start off with the Tar Valon itself; what does it mean?

Answer: Tower of the Guard

Tar Valon derives its meaning from 'Tar' meaning Tower and 'Valon' meaning Guard. Built by Ogier, this city is the stronghold of Aes Sedai and contains many treasures from the Age of Legends.
2. Tar Valon is located on an island in the middle of the river Erinin. It houses the only Ogier Grove that still survives outside the Stedding. By how many bridges is it connected to the mainland?

Answer: 6

These bridges connect to arterial roads which connect Tar Valon to all major cities. They all lead directly to the White Tower, the Heart of Tar Valon.
3. Let's now move to Novices and the stringent regulations which hold them in strict discipline. How many doors to the Tower Library may a Novice use?

Answer: 2

The Main doors to the East, if the Novice is sent by an Aes Sedai and the small door to the Southwest when she goes by herself. The Tower Library is manned by Brown Aes Sedai.
4. A number of Aes Sadai have Warders, also called Gaidin in the Old Tongue. What does Gaidin literally mean in the Old Tongue?

Answer: Brother to Battle

The Gaidin are bonded to the Aes Sedai and receive a number of benefits due to this bonding. However if his (and now her) Aes Sedai dies, then the Gaidin dies or goes mad.
5. The Hall of the Tower consisting of 21 Sitters (3 from each Ajah) has nearly equal power to the Amyrlin Seat. Under what circumstances may a Novice be allowed into the Hall of the Tower?

Answer: To carry messages or to be expelled

The approval of the Hall of the Tower is required before any decree of the Amyrlin Seat can be passed except in cases of War when the Law of War takes precedence.
6. How many Aes Sedai are normally present at the beginning of the ceremony by which a Novice is raised to Accepted?

Answer: 5, three at the Rings, The Mistress of Novices and one other

In this Ceremony, the Novice has to face her worst fears in a ter'angreal. If she returns after passing through the ter'angreal thrice then she is raised to Accepted by the Amyrlin Seat.
7. The Tower Guards are responsible for the protection of Tar Valon. What symbol do the they wear on their chests?

Answer: The Flame of Tar Valon

The Tower Guard has outposts in the villages bordering Tar Valon and has recently been increased by Elaida Sedai to combat the threat of Gareth Byrne's Army.
8. In which part of Tar Valon is the Ogier Grove?

Answer: East

The Ogier are a race who tend the Great Trees. They were responsible for building many of the Greatest Cities ever in Randland including Tar Valon and the Inner City of Caemlyn.
9. What shape is the strongest Sa'angreal in Tar Valon?

Answer: A White Fluted Wand

This Sa'angreal was used to heal Mat, and is the weakest of the four Sa'angreal we know.
10. As given by the book, "Lord of Chaos", how many Sitters are required to stand to raise an Amyrlin?

Answer: The Entire Hall

The process for the election of an Amyrlin is quite complex, the candidate requiring the approval of all the Sitters in the Hall. One of the funnier things about the ceremony is that the words for the Summons to the Amyrlin Seat are the same as that of a Trial.
