Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chapter 21: Jacques explained the Mona Lisa to his six-year-old grand-daughter Sophie telling her the style of painting used for it. What type of painting was it?

Answer: sfumato

Sfumato style paintings was very hard to do. Leonardo DaVinci was better at it than anyone. People liked to guess why Mona Lisa was smiling. Sfumato is "a term used by Leonardo da Vinci to refer to a painting technique which overlays translucent layers of colour to create perceptions of depth, volume and form" (Wikipedia).
2. Chapter 22: The keystone was supposedly hidden beneath the Rose Line. What was the Rose line?

Answer: the ancient Prime Meridian

"A strip of brass that segmented the sanctuary on a perfect north-south axis. It was an ancient sundial of sorts, a vestige of the pagan temple that had once stood on this very spot. The sun's rays, shining through the oculus on the south wall moved further and further down the line every day, indicating the passage of time, form solstice to solstice."
3. Chapter 23: The Mona Lisa was housed in a room with extra security measures inside the Louvre. Which room was this?

Answer: La Salle des Etates

"The Salle des Etats was one of this museum's rare culs-de-sac, a dead end and the only room off the middle of the Grand Gallery."
4. Chapter 24: Sister Sandrine was more than the keeper of the church. What else was she?

Answer: sentry

"High above Silas in the balcony, Sister Sandrine stifled a gasp. Her darkest fears had just been confirmed. This visitor was not who he seemed. The mysterious Opus Dei monk had come to Saint-Sulpice for another purpose. A secret purpose."
5. Chapter 25: Bezu Fache was certain Langdon had called the U.S. embassy, but later found out that he had called something/one else. How did he find out that instead he had gotten a tip from Sophie?

Answer: Fache remembered Langdon had called from his phone

"It was at that moment eyeing his cellular phone that Fache realized the answers were in the palm of his hand."
6. Chapter 26: "Since taking up residence in the Louvre, The Mona Lisa-or La Jaconde as they call her in France-had been stolen twice, most recently in 19__, when she disappeared from the Louvre's "salle impenetrable"-Le Salon Carre."

Answer: 11

"Parisians wept in the streets and wrote newspaper articles begging the thieves for the painting's return. Two years later, the Mona Lisa was discovered hidden in the false bottom of a trunk in a Florence hotel room."
7. Chapter 27: When Bezu Fache heard Sophie's recorded message he sent half of his men back to the Louvre perimeter. In order to ensure Langdon's capture he split the other half to send them to various Parisian airports.

Answer: False

"The other half he sent to guard the only location in Paris where Robert Langdon could find safe harbor."
8. Chapter 28: "Malleus Maleficarum-or___ ______ ______-indoctrinated the world to the dangers of free thinking women and instructed the clergy how to locate torture and destroy them."

Answer: The Witches Hammer

During three hundred years of witch hunts, the Church burned 5 million women at the stake for anything they related to witchcraft. Including the following: "all female scholars, priestesses, gypsies, mystics, nature lovers, herb gatherers, and any women suspiciously in tune with the natural world." Midwives were also killed for their heretical practice of using medical knowledge to ease the pain of childbirth-a suffering, the Church claimed was God's rightful punishment for Eve's taking of the Apple of Knowledge, thus giving birth to Original Sin.
9. Chapter 29: Inside the Saint-Sulpice, Silas looked for something to crack open the hollow space in the floor. What did he find?

Answer: candle holder

"Iron on marble. It would echo off the vaulted ceilings. Would the nun hear him? She should be asleep by now. Even so it was a chance Silas prefered not to take."
10. Chapter 30: Behind which of the following of DaVinci's works did Sophie find the key to her grandfather's bank?

Answer: Madonna of the Rocks

"When Sophie was a little girl, no trip to the Mona Lisa had been complete without her grandfather dragging her across the room to see this second painting."
