Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sorcha's mother dies giving birth to her, and her father neglects his children out of grief for his lost wife. However, Sorcha is lucky in that she has many older brothers who raise her. How many older brothers does she have?

Answer: 6

The names of Sorcha's brothers are Liam, Diarmid, Cormack, Conor, Finbar, and Padriac, in order from oldest to youngest. Had she been a boy, Sorcha would have been the seventh son of a seventh son, which would have given her great magical power.
2. Why does Sorcha not enjoy the crossing from Ireland to Britain?

Answer: She gets very seasick.

Sorcha has never traveled by boat before, and it turns out that she does not have very good sea legs. However, Red is extremely kind to her. He, John, and Ben all take turns holding her head as she retches. She meets Red for the first time when he saves her from drowning in a river, but that is before he decides to take her across the sea to Britain.

Although she would not leave the Forest by choice, it is not her distress at leaving that ruins her voyage. In fact, she says, "I wondered, later, why it did not break my heart to go away across the sea, far from the forest, leaving no sign my brothers could read, no map or chart by which they might find me."
3. When Richard of Northwoods holds Sorcha in prison, she sees a vision of her future children. What is the name of the girl in the vision?

Answer: Niamh

Niamh was also the name of Sorcha's mother, who died at Sorcha's birth. However, Aisling, Liadan, and Fainne are all names of members of Sorcha's family. Aisling is the name of the wife of Sorcha's eventual son. Sorcha also has another daughter, whose name is Liadan. Sorcha's granddaughter is named Fainne.
4. To what shade of blue are Simon's eyes often compared?

Answer: Cornflower blue

Simon shares his blue eyes with his mother, Anne, and his brother, Red. However, Juliet Marillier describes Red's eyes as "blue as ice, as blue as the sky on a frosty winter morning."
5. What herb does Sorcha primarily use in her efforts to heal Simon's body and spirit?

Answer: Goldenwood

The lady of the Forest tells Sorcha that it is her task to heal Simon. It is she who advises Sorcha to use the Goldenwood. Later in the book, the lady of the Forest also tells Sorcha that in order to lift the curse from her brothers, she must weave them shirts made from starwort.
6. When Simon left Briton, his faithful dog remained at Harrowfield. What is her name?

Answer: Alys

When Sorcha meets Alys, she is a sad, old, gray dog who misses Simon very much. Alys takes a liking to Sorcha, even though the dog won't let most people near her. Perhaps she senses that Sorcha knew Simon and helped him. Linn is the name of Sorcha's brother Cormack's dog.
7. Although his friends call him Red, what is the real name of the eldest son of Harrowfield?

Answer: Hugh

His friends call him Red because that is the color of his hair. However, the name is was given at birth was Hugh.
8. Out of what material is the ring made that Red gives to Sorcha?

Answer: Wood

Not only is the ring made from wood, but Red actually carved it himself over many months. He carves on it a pattern of leaves and a small owl. He and Simon both have a gift for carving wood. Earlier in the book, Simon leaves Sorcha a wooden carving with the Harrowfield emblem on it.
9. When Red arrives to rescue Sorcha from a fiery death, one of his uncle Richard's archers nearly kills him. However, Sorcha breaks her silence and warns him of the danger, and the arrow does not hit him anywhere fatal. Where is he pierced by the arrow?

Answer: His shoulder

Red does not let this mere wound keep him from Sorcha. He bears the pain and manages to snatch her from the flames.
10. Sorcha's brother Finbar is a fierce warrior at heart.

Answer: False

Finbar is in fact a pacifist. It was through his designs that Sorcha helped rescue and heal Simon from their father's men. Their father, Lord Colum, does not like that his son's attitude is not a warlike one, although he doesn't know that Finbar helps prisoners of war to escape.
11. What magical gift does Finbar have?

Answer: The ability to see the future

The ability to see the future, called the Sight, is one that runs in Finbar's family. The ability to heal does as well, although that is Sorcha's gift, not Finbar's. These gifts are the legacy of their Fomhoire ancestry.
12. The Lady Oonagh turns Finbar and his brothers into a certain kind of bird. It is only through Sorcha's strength that they can be saved. What kind of bird do they become?

Answer: Swans

Although Sorcha defeats the Lady Oonagh, Finbar always bears a mark of the curse because he is not turned fully back. One of his arms remains a wing forever.
13. Sorcha's brother Conor has a set of special skills as well. He can speak from mind to mind and can retain his human consciousness even as a bird. Why does he have these skills?

Answer: He is a druid.

Once the curse is lifted, Conor eventually leaves Sevenwaters to become the archdruid. His father might have been a druid, had he not fallen deeply in love with the woman who ended up being the mother of Liam, Diarmid, Cormack, Conor, Finbar, Padriac, and Sorcha.
14. Conor has a twin brother. What is his name?

Answer: Cormack

Although Conor and Cormack are physically identical, their personalities are quite different. Cormack has a warrior spirit, whereas Conor is a druid and is in favor of peace and wisdom.
15. Conor knows and approves of Sorcha's efforts to heal Simon.

Answer: True

Sorcha does not at first know that Conor is aware of her and Finbar's actions, but eventually realizes that they have Conor's approval.
