The aptitude test was conducted by injecting a serum into a person's neck, which put them into dream-like state, or simulation, that was monitored. Beatrice's test was conducted by a member of the Dauntless named Tori. Most people did not know they were in a simulation, but Divergent people knew they were and could change things.

After Beatrice's test was over, Tori told her she was Divergent and to not let anyone know this because it would put her in danger.

Caleb was less than a year older than Beatrice, so they choose at the same time. When he choose Erudite, Beatrice was shocked because he had always seemed to fit in with the Abnegation. The Erudite spent their time doing research and inventing.

The initiates had to jump from the building's roof into a hole in the ground that led to the Dauntless compound. They landed safely in a net at the bottom. The Dauntless faction was all about facing fears and being brave and this was part of that. Beatrice was the first of the transfer initiates to jump.

After landing in the net in the Dauntless compound, Beatrice was pulled out by a boy named Four. When he asked for her name, she told him Tris. She felt a new place deserved a new name.

Four normally worked with computers in the surveillance room, but was taking a break to train the initiates who had transferred from other factions. He was eighteen and highly respected in the Dauntless. There was an instant connection between Four and Tris that eventually led to mutual romantic feelings. They had to keep their relationship secret, though, since he was her teacher.

Only the top ten ranked initiates would become full Dauntless members after initiation, and the higher ranked people would get better jobs. Because of this, there was a lot of competition between the initiates. Peter was one of the strongest and most ruthless initiates. He picked fights with many people, including Tris.

The night after the first rankings were posted, the transfer initiates woke up to screaming. When the lights were turned on, it was revealed that Edward had been stabbed in the eye. He didn't die, but because he was now blind in one eye, he was forced to leave the Dauntless and become factionless.

Al was one of Tris's friends, but one night after Tris was ranked number one among the transfer initiates following the second stage of initiation, he, Peter, and Drew attacked her. They beat her up and dangled her over the chasm. They might have killed her if Four hadn't rescued her. Al only went along with it because he was ranked so low and he was afraid of becoming factionless.

Afterward, he tried to apologize to Tris, but she refused to forgive him. Not long after that, he killed himself by jumping into the chasm. Tris thought not forgiving him was part of the reason he killed himself.

Before the start of the third stage of initiation, Four let Tris go through his fear landscape with him, which consisted of four fears, hence his nickname. Such a low amount of fears was really rare. His fears were heights, confined spaces, having to shoot a woman, and getting whipped by his father. During the last fear, Tris recognized the man as an Abnegation leader named Marcus Eaton.

She also remembered that a couple years ago his son, Tobias, had transferred to a different faction. Four then told her about how his father had abused him, which caused him to leave the Abnegation and join Dauntless.

Tris had seven fears. The others were drowning in the ocean, shooting her family, being kidnapped, and being burned at the stake. To get through the fear landscape, the initiates had to break through their fears. Once they were done, Eric, one of the Dauntless leaders, injected them each with a tracking device.

The evening after all the initiates went through their fear landscapes, the rankings were announced. Tris was ranked number one. Her friends, Christina, Will, Uriah, Lynn, and Marlene were also all ranked in the top ten. Those who weren't ranked high enough became factionless.

The injection most of the Dauntless members got that night had a simulation serum in it. In the middle of the night, almost all of the Dauntless woke up in a hypnotized state and began to march to the Abnegation sector of the city, where they began to unknowingly kill the Abnegation leaders. The only Dauntless who where unaffected by the serum were the Divergent, like Tris and Four, and the Dauntless leaders and traitors who weren't given the serum because they were in on it. The Erudite hated the Abnegation because they thought they were corrupt.

Tris and Four tried to pretend they were in the simulation, but when Eric attempted to shoot Four, who he disliked, Tris attacked him. The two then tried to escape, but they were captured by the Dauntless traitors, with Tris getting shot in the shoulder in the process. They were then taken to the Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews. Four was given a new serum that was supposed to affect the Divergent. He was then taken to the Dauntless control room to run the simulation. But, because Tris was wounded, she was to be killed. She was placed in a tank like in her fear landscape and almost drowned, but was saved by her mother at the last minute. Her mother revealed that she had originally been in Dauntless and she was Divergent, too. The two began to make their way through the city to a safe house where her father, brother, and other Abnegation members were hiding. On the way, though, her mother was killed while causing a distraction so Tris could get away.

After her mother was killed, Tris came across Will. He was controlled by the simulation and didn't know what he was doing. He pointed his gun at her and was about to shoot her when she shot him in the head instead. Even though she knew she had no choice but to shoot him or let him shot her, Tris felt a lot of guilt about killing her friend.

Soon after, she made it to where her father and brother were hiding. Marcus Eaton was also with them. They all came up with a plan to go to the Dauntless compound and stop the simulation. While there, they came across Peter, who knew what was happening. Tris shot him in the arm and forced him to help them. At one point, Tris and her father went on without the other three and her father was killed. Tris made it to the control room where Four was. Even though he attacked her at first, she was able to get him out of the simulation because of his love for her. Together they turned off the simulation and took the hard drive containing all of the data out of the computer.

Answer: to the Amity headquarters

After the simulation and attack on Abnegation ended, Tris and Four rejoined Caleb, Marcus, and Peter. They all left the Dauntless compound together. They got on a train heading for the edge of the city since the Amity headquarters was located outside of the city. They hoped the peace-loving faction would provide a safe house for them and the other Abnegation survivors.
