Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which early novel concerns the goings-on of a shipwrecked Englishman, who struggles with aspects of religion and ownership while stranded?

Answer: Defoe, "Robinson Crusoe"

Crusoe constantly struggles to remain a dignified Englishman while abandoned on this island. He takes ownership of his surroundings (the natives and resources) because he feels that being a gentleman gives him a natural right above all other savages.
2. This novel describes the rise and fall of Michael Henchard, a gentleman whose self-destructing nature brings about his downfall. He remains obsessed with his standing in public opinion.

Answer: Hardy, "Mayor of Casterbridge"

After losing favor with the people, Henchard renounces all of his possessions and commits to being a hermit. Also, after committing suicide, he asks that no one remember him. These are acts to gain favor with the people, not to repent.
3. Which Dickens novel follows Pip in his ascension from poverty to gentility?

Answer: "Great Expectations"

Personally, Pip is one of my favorite characters in all of literature.
4. This novel covers a 24-hour span and follows a handful of characters who struggle with their past and present forms of self.

Answer: Woolf, "Mrs. Dalloway"

Clarissa acts as a "centre" to the collection of characters who struggle to find their respective identities in early, twentieth century England.
5. Which of the following novels did Jane Austen NOT write?

Answer: "Barchester Towers"

"Barchester Towers" was written by Anthony Trollope.
6. This novel takes the reader to different fictional lands with different forms of government. One of these lands is at war due to preparation of eggs.

Answer: Swift, "Gulliver's Travels"

At one point, Gulliver even urinates on a burning building to put out the fire. Hilarious.
7. In which book would you find "Honest Thady"?

Answer: Edgeworth, "Castle Rackrent"

In this short novel, we find out that Thady may not be all that "honest."
8. Who wrote "Frankenstein?"

Answer: Mary Shelley

Shelley's masterpiece is the very essence of humanity. It is a shame that pop culture has completely distorted the original idea of Frankenstein's monster.
9. In Eliot's "Adam Bede," who accidentally commits infanticide?

Answer: Hetty Sorrel

In this novel, Hetty can loosely be related to Hester in Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter." There are several similarities found in the two texts.
10. In Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," the protagonist, Stephen, has a symbolic surname. This surname has its origins with what story from Greek mythology?

Answer: Icarus' wings of wax

Stephen's surname is "Dedalus." According to the myth, Daedalus constructed wax wings so that Icarus could escape the maze of the centaur. In Joyce's novel, Stephen attempts a flight from his prison of religion and constraint.
