Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Mr. Woodhouse's first name?

Answer: Henry

We find out his first name in Isabella's children. Her oldest son is called Henry, after Mr. Woodhouse, the second son is called John after John Knightly (Usually the first son would be called after his father) The other children are called Bella (after Isabella) George after Mr. Knightly, and Emma the newest baby.
2. How far is Highbury from London?

Answer: 16 miles

It is close enough to go to London for the day (Frank supposedly went to London for a haircut) but far enough not to be convienent. When the Churchills move from London to Richmond they are only nine miles away and the ball is back on.
3. Which of these descriptions best describes Harriet Smith?

Answer: Beautiful but not very bright

Harriet is very pretty, but she's not very bright. She is well-meaning and pleasant and easily persuaded by Miss Woodhouse. Mr. Knightly does not think the friendship will do either of the ladies any good.
4. When Harriet and Emma begin to collect riddles, the first one offered by Mr. Elton is; "My first doth affliction denote That my second is destined to feel, And my whole is the best antidote That affliction to soften and heal." What is the answer to this riddle?

Answer: Woman

This must have been a very well-known riddle, as Jane Austen doesn't even bother to supply the answer for the reader. The Affliction is "woe" and it is felt by "man", put the two together and you get "Woman".
5. Apart from Harriet Smith, which other resident of Highbury seems to be in love with Mr. Elton?

Answer: Miss Nash

Miss Nash is a teacher at Mrs. Goddard's school and she certainly seems infatuated with him. She has written down every one of his sermons since he came to Highbury and makes a big todo about peeking at him through the window (and letting Harriet have a peek) Many of the young ladies around Highbury think he is handsome and a catch.

He certainly would raise Miss Nash in social standing if she could marry someone like Mr. Elton.
6. Why wasn't Frank Churchill raised by his father?

Answer: All of these reasons

Frank is raised to a life of privilege and luxury with the Churchills. Mrs. Churchill is probably more of a snob than Lady Catherine, (from "Pride & Prejudice") and she had rather humble beginnings.
7. What did Mr. Elton do while Emma painted the portrait of Harriet?

Answer: He read to them

Emma suggested he read to them to keep him from peering over her shoulder.
8. Who was the Apothecary for Highbury?

Answer: Mr. Perry

Mr. Woodhouse relies very heavily on Mr. Perry. Mr. Wingfield is Isabella's apothecary in London.
9. Mr. Woodhouse is distressed that Isabella's family went to South End for a holiday. Where did he say would have been a much better place for sea bathing (according to his apothecary)?

Answer: Cromer

Cromer is in Norfolk on the North Sea, it is about 135 miles from London. South End is much closer to London and certainly more convienent for a family with five small children. Brighton was a popular spot on the English Channel and Lyme is much further west in Somerset and features in "Persuasion".
10. What does Mr. Elton do to Emma in the carriage on the way home from the dinner party at Randalls?

Answer: Makes violent love to her

The actual quote from the book is, "...her hand seized - her attention demanded, and Mr. Elton actually making violent love to her..." (a slightly different meaning than today). This is one of the funniest scenes in the book, when Emma realizes how wrong she was about Mr. Elton.
11. Where does Mr. Elton go to get a wife?

Answer: Bath

He went to Bath and met Miss Agusta Hawkins, daughter of a Bristol Merchant with 10,000 pounds.
12. How did Mrs. Elton greatly offend Emma?

Answer: She offered to introduce her into Bath society

Mrs. Elton offered for her friend Mrs. Partridge to introduce Emma into Bath. As if Emma would need an introduction!

"It was as much as Emma could bear without being impolite. The idea of her being indebted to Mrs. Elton for what was called an introduction-of her going into public under the auspices of a friend of Mrs. Elton's,- probably some vulgar, dashing widow... The dignity of Miss Woodhouse, of Hartfield, was sunk indeed!"
13. Where does Frank Churchill buy gloves in Highbury?

Answer: Ford's

To make a purchase at Ford's would make him a true citizen of Highbury.
14. In Jane's boating "accident" at Wymouth, who saved her life?

Answer: Mr. Dixon

She is nearly dashed off the boat and Mr. Dixon saved her life. Frank was there too. This causes Emma and Frank to speculate that Mr. Dixon and Jane had feelings for each other.
15. After Miss Campbell married Mr. Dixon, what city did they settle near?

Answer: Dublin

Mr. Dixon was from Ireland, they were settling at Bally Craig near Dublin.
16. What was William Larkin's occupation?

Answer: Farmer

He was one of the farmers of Donwell Abbey, Mr. Knightly often consulted with him.
17. What was the name of Mrs. Elton's sister's estate?

Answer: Maple Grove

She mentions Maple Grove almost as much as Mr. Collins mentions Rosings in "Pride and Prejudice".
18. What is the name of Mrs. Elton's sister?

Answer: Selina Suckling

One of my all time favourite Austen names....
19. The Churchills came to London for Mrs. Churchill's health. When she couldn't take the noise of London, what suburb did they relocate to?

Answer: Richmond

Once they moved to Richmond they were only nine miles from Highbury and Frank could visit easily.
20. Where was there an outing to pick strawberries?

Answer: Donwell Abbey

It was Mr. Knightly's estate of Donwell Abbey. The next day was the outing to Box Hill.
21. In so many words, how did Emma insult Miss Bates?

Answer: She told her she talked too much

The actual wording was, "Ah ma'am but there may be a difficulty. pardon me, but you will be limited as to the number, -only three at once."

Miss Bates did talk too much, but it was very rude of Emma to point it out and embarrass her in front of her friends. Once Miss Bates understood the insult, she was very hurt.
22. Who was Harriet with when she was attacked by Gypsies?

Answer: Miss Bickerton

Miss Bickerton was another parlour boarder at Mrs. Goddard's. When the Gypsies approached she ran off, but Harriet tripped and fell. In the recent movie they incorrectly have Emma with Harriet.
23. With whose family did Mrs. Elton find a position for Miss Fairfax?

Answer: Mrs. Smallridge

Mrs. Smallridge was a friend of Mrs. Bragg and known to Mrs. Suckling. (Of course, the Tupmans were upstarts!) All of these families are from the Bristol area, and we hear about them through Mrs. Elton.
24. Harriet Smith turned out to have who for a father?

Answer: A tradesman

She was the daughter of someone in trade, rich enough to do the right thing in having her raised and educated, but not want to be known that he had a natural daughter. I hope no one thought it was Mr. Woodhouse!
25. "Emma" was the last of her books published in Jane Austen's lifetime.

Answer: True

First published in 1816, "Emma" was the fourth and last book published in her lifetime. "Persuasion" and "Northanger Abbey" were published soon after her death in 1817.
