Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Little Miss Muffet
Answer: Curds and whey
Just add some rennet to milk and the milk proteins clump together leaving a fluid, just like cottage cheese. In this traditional nursery rhyme, the young lady in question was happily eating her meal when frightened by a spider, who sat down beside her.
2. The owl and the pussy cat
Answer: Mince, and slices of quince
This refers not to minced meat, but the chopped fruit found in pies at Christmas, as well as a fruit from Asia. In the poem written by Edward Lear, the owl and the pussycat dined on these delicacies with a runcible spoon, as they celebrated their marriage.
3. Little Jack Horner
Answer: Christmas pie
The self-proclaimed good boy pulled out a plum on his thumb in this traditional nursery rhyme. It has been suggested that the rhyme is about political opportunism - politicians having a finger in the pie, and scoring plum rewards for themselves.
4. Sam-I-Am
Answer: Green eggs and ham
In this children's book written by Dr. Seuss, Sam-I-Am tried to convince someone to eat green eggs and ham. When he finally he gave in and tried them, he discovered he liked them, and thanked Sam-I-Am for introducing him to the new food experience.
5. Oliver Twist
Answer: Gruel
Poor Oliver was so hungry he dared to ask for more gruel (oatmeal, water and a little salt) while in the workhouse. "Oliver Twist" was written by Charles Dickens, and saw Oliver ending up in a much happier situation.
6. Goldilocks
Answer: Porridge
Of course, she tried the porridge of all three members of the bear family until she found the one that was just right, in the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Not content with breaking into their house while they were out, she destroyed their furniture as well as eating their food.
7. Alice
Answer: Best butter
Only the "best butter" was found at the Mad Hatter's tea party, which she attended in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll.
8. Albus Dumbledore
Answer: Earwax-flavored bean
When offered a selection of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans by Harry Potter, in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone",poor Professor Dumbledore selected one that tasted of ear wax. Still, it was probably better than the vomit-flavored one he recalled from his youth!
9. Violet Beauregarde
Answer: Chewing gum
Violet Beauregarde was a competitive gum chewer who was told not to eat the gum Willy Wonka was making as it was not yet ready for human consumption. Alas she did, and turned blue and swelled up. This occurred in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" a novel written by Roald Dahl.
10. Ralph and Jack
Answer: Wild Pig
In William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies", Ralph and Jack are stranded on an island with other boys and Jack manages to find and kill a wild pig for them to eat. The pig's head finally is mounted as a gift to "the beast" and Simon names it lord of the flies.
