When Tohru first meets Kagura, she is a very meek girl and seems extremely shy. When she sees Kyo, she begins to cry, saying how much she had missed him when he disappeared... and then she attacks him. She has an evil grin on her face and little stars in her eyes. Quite amusing.

Several third-year students ask Yuki to dress as a girl for the festival especially for them. Yuki has no choice but to wear it. We meet Hatori and Momiji in this book, and Hatori takes a picture of Yuki, who then claims that his life will be over when Akito sees him dressed as a girl.

Tohru meets Haru during the distance run for gym, and when Yuki and Kyo run by, Haru trips Kyo. A little bit after the encounter, Yuki collapses. They are afraid to take him to a hospital for fear of him changing into a rat because of weakness, so Haru hugs Tohru, transforming himself into the ox, or cow, and he carries Yuki back to the house on his back.

When Tohru, Uo, Hana, Yuki, and Kyo all go to visit Kyoko's grave, Kyo notices that Uo is wearing a suicide squad uniform. Uo says: "I got this from Kyoko-san. The coat of the leader of the Red Butterfly suicide squad," and Tohru goes on to say "that's mom's name from when she was a gang leader!" You learn about Kyoko's past later on in the series.

Tohru tells Kisa of her experiences when she was younger. She relates them to what's happening to Kisa now, and tells her not to be afraid. Tohru got through it and so could she. It's a very touching scene.

After Tohru comes back with Kyo, the story goes into Kyo's past, when he meets Kazuma and is taken in under his wing. Part of the reason he cares for Kyo is because he knows what will happen when he grows up: he will be confined to a room, just like his grandfather was, whom he only met once. Kazuma wants to give him the freedom he deserves before he is confined to that room.

Uo doesn't believe that Tohru is the "Red Butterfly's" daughter, so Tohru invites her over and meets her mother. She's extremely surprised that this doting mother could be the same gang leader that she's looked up to for so many years. When they part, Uo says this: "I'm just disappointed, okay! To think the Red Butterfly turned out to be a... a housewife... and a friendly hostess... and a... doting fricken mother! I can't believe I ever looked up to you!"

Yuki tears his shirt on a branch, and while they are talking, Aaya is "fixing" his shirt. At the end of the conversation, Aaya holds up his shirt and it says "I live for my older brother." Needless to say, Yuki was not pleased.

All her classmates thought she was a witch. One of the students had heard that witches eat live newts, so they forced them in her mouth. She wanted nothing else than for the students to die. When a boy collapses, she blames herself for willing him to die. She's afraid that if it happens again, she might really kill someone.

Everyone is at a Sohma summer home and they think of something fun to do. Kisa agrees, and Hiro comes along. Hiro makes fun of Torhu for a bit, and makes Kisa angry at him. A little lover's quarrel.

Momiji won't let Akito pass and Akito hits him. Tohru comes rushing in and stops him. Akito tells Tohru that if she thinks she can "save" Kyo and Yuki, she should be ashamed of her arrogance. Just as soon as Kyo leaves high school, he will be confined, just as the previous cat had been, and when Yuki graduates, he will return to him, and nothing will ever change.

We realize that the only reason Shigure went with Tohru was to see Mayu-sensei, his ex-girlfriend whom he still liked. Of course, Shigure did not get the answer he wanted, but who could blame the girl?

When Tohru goes to the Sohma estate to see Kureno and ask if he is the same Kureno that Uo is in love with, she meets up with Momo. Momo asks if Tohru will ask Momiji if he'll be her older brother, and that she was learning to play the violin so Momiji and she could play together. When Tohru relays the story to Momiji, he begins to cry out of happiness.

Yuki and Kakeru are talking, and Yuki admits something he hasn't admitted to anyone, not even to the person involved. He says it's "pitiful and pathetic" that he "was looking for a "mother" in her."

Kyo was walking with Kazuma when his hat flew off. Yuki was not far behind them and picked it up and attempted to give it back to him. Instead of taking it back, he glared at Yuki and stormed off. Earlier, Kyo and Yuki had had an encounter where Kyo told Yuki to just disappear because everything that was happening was his fault.
