Pippin offered his sword to Denethor the steward of Gondor and Denethor readily accepted it. Pippin was liveried in the black and silver of the knights of Minas Tirith, and, despite his stature, was valiant in the city's defence.

Merry was waiting for the party to arrive in Crickhollow, and did not come with Frodo from Hobbiton. He was not present at the first sighting of a black rider.

Sam managed to cook a brace of rabbits with the pots and pans he treasured so dearly while resting in Ithilien. However, he was forced to dispose of them in Mordor when the going got tough. Remember, it was the fire from Sam's cooking that tipped off Faramir as to the whereabouts of Sam and Frodo - perhaps it was a good idea that he dumped them when he had a chance.

Merry was smoking pipe-weed when Théoden happened upon the two hobbits; alas, Pippin was "overcome by weariness" and was fast asleep. Frodo and Sam were already well on their way to Mordor by then. Pippin later woke, and Merry and Pippin treated Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas to the flotsam of Isengard.

In the fight of the Chamber of Mazarbul, Sam felled an orc with his blade from the Barrow-Downs. In return he received a scratch on the forehead, but luckily, it was neither infected nor poisoned. Later, when the party made it out of Moria, Aragorn cleaned it out.

At the West-Gate of Moria, Frodo was grabbed by a tentacle and was almost pulled in the water. It was as if the Watcher was drawn to Frodo by some dark power. Sam was closer to the water, but the tentacle didn't even consider grabbing him.

Sam and Rosie Cotton had 13 children: Elanor, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin and Tolman. In this time, he managed to be mayor of the Shire for seven straight terms of office.

After Merry and Pippin were captured by Orcs on Amon Lhaw, Pippin managed to free his hands, and, when the Orcs were distracted, managed to throw off his Lorien-brooch to help show Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas where they were being taken. "Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall", Aragorn had said when the hunters found the sign.

Sam held this post from Will Whitfoot's resignation in the year 6 of the Fourth Age to the year 55. He was also made a counselor of the North-Kingdom by King Elessar.

Although mightily outnumbered, the host of Elessar stood fast before the Iron Gate when it opened, Peregrin Took amongst them. In the battle he had a Bilbo-like experience, as he saw the eagles coming, but was buried under the body of a troll. He was found after the battle by Gimli.

Pippin couldn't resist the temptation and looked into the Orthanc-stone. He saw the Dark Lord on his throne. This was the very stone he had retrieved earlier that day when Wormtongue launched it from Orthanc in Gandalf's general direction.

The stone was a gift from Arwen Evenstar to help Frodo's pain ease away as he was wounded "by blade, by sting and by tooth". He would often finger the stone in moments of unease, and it was always around his neck, in place of the One Ring.

This horn was a gift of Lady Éowyn and King Éomer. When the Shire was scoured, the horn helped raise the hobbits of the Shire against Sharkey's ruffians.

Frodo accepted to go on the quest, and Sam was present at the secret council and was caught, and was told by Elrond that he was to go with Frodo. Upon hearing this, Merry and Pippin insisted that they be allowed to go as well.

Merry stabbed the Witch-king in the back of the leg with the blade of Westernesse, helping Éowyn kill the Dark Captain. As the prophecy went, the Witch-King was not to be slain by a man, but by a woman and a Hobbit.

Frodo's parents, Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck, died when he was still young; they capsized their boat into the Brandywine River, and were "drownded". Frodo as a young child was taken in by his uncle, or cousin (depending on how you looked at the family tree) Bilbo Baggins.

Many hobbit-folk were worried about this as Bilbo had already amassed a reputation of being slightly eccentric.

Sam opposed Strider because he had a ruffian-like look about him. Frodo took Aragorn on anyway, mainly because of the words of the verses attributed to Aragorn - "all that is gold does not glitter". This verse, and more besides, were later discovered to have been written by Bilbo.

Out of curiosity, or just plain boredom, he dropped a small stone into a well in upper Moria. Because of the depth of the well, the plunk of the stone was magnified, and minutes later, sounds from the deep were heard. Gandalf was more than slightly miffed.
