Quite ironic really, that scarlet is a colour associated with passion and the scarlet sash representing chastity.

A philologist is a specialist in Newspeak. One of the scariest aspects of the book, and the project Syme is working on, is the destruction of words. One day no one will have the language capability to be able to express rebelliousness towards Big Brother.

Everyone had their number. The 'instructress' makes everyone exercise much to Winston's dismay.
