Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of pig (or boar) was Old Major?

Answer: Middle White boar

Old Major was the first animal to be introduced to the reader. He was a Middle White boar and was Mr Jones' prize pig, exhibited under the name of Willingdon Beauty. It was Old Major's speech that helped motivate the animals for a rebellion.
2. What event finally caused the animals to rebel against Mr Jones?

Answer: Mr Jones lashed out at the animals after finding them in the store

Old Major gave a motivating speech to the animals in chapter one. During chapter two, Mr Jones arrives home drunk and forgets to feed the animals before going inside for a nap. He hears a commotion outside and discovers that the animals had broken into the store and were helping themselves to food - this caused Mr Jones to lash out in anger.

The animals were so fed up of being treated this way that they fought back despite their actions not being planned.
3. Before the pigs took over completely, how did meetings always end?

Answer: With the singing of 'Beasts of England'

The animals would sing the song that Old Major taught them before the Rebellion even began. It was taught not only to the animals of Animal Farm but to those in neighbouring farms. The song was always sung at the end of the meetings as it seemed to lift the animals' spirits and unite them.

However, a while after Napoleon took over, he announced that 'Beasts of England' was to be sung no more, as it expressed the animals' longing for a better society, which, Napoleon believed, they already had.
4. Which of these commandments did Squealer change?

Answer: No animal shall drink alcohol

Squealer changed the fifth commandment 'no animal shall drink alcohol' to 'no animal shall drink alcohol to excess'. This happened during chapter 8 when Squealer was discovered drunk in the barn covered in white paint. At the end of the novel, however, the commandments were completely abolished save one that read: 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others'.
5. What did the sheep first chant before the pigs took over animal farm?

Answer: 'Four legs good, two legs bad'

The sheep would chant 'four legs good, two legs bad'. This would be a reference to the animals (four legs) and humans (two legs). Later on during the novel, the pigs, with Napolean as their leader, are seen walking on their hind legs. It is then that the sheep are taught to chant 'four legs good, two legs better'.
6. Who do the pigs finally end up doing business with at the end of the novel?

Answer: Mr Pilkington

Mr Whymper, a solicitor from Willingdon, was aiding Napoleon in a business agreement with either Mr Pilkington or Mr Frederick. At the end of the novel, the pigs invite Pilkington to the farm where they indulge in eating, drinking and playing cards.
7. What was the name of the decoration Napoleon confers upon himself?

Answer: The Order of the Green Banner

After the Battle of the Windmill in Chapter 8, Napoleon confers the Order of the Green Banner upon himself. The green flag is the animals' flag that they had designed shortly after the rebellion.
8. In chapter 8, the pigs find a case of whisky in the cellar. What is an intoxicated Napoleon wearing when he dashes around outside before going straight back into the house?

Answer: Bowler hat

The pigs find a case of whisky and evidently drink it, as the next day Squealer is seen looking rather ill. He also reports that Napoleon is dying. To the reader, this is clearly a hangover from the whisky, but the animals do not know any better and actually believe the life of their leader is hanging in the balance... until he appears to get better by the evening.

The next day, Napoleon was back at work.
9. How many hens die after they rebel against Napoleon's orders and have their rations stopped?

Answer: 9

Napoleon had accepted a contract from Whymper for four hundred eggs a week, and the hens were told to surrender their eggs. They attempted a rebellion by laying their eggs high up on the rafters and allowing them to fall off and smash. To punish the hens, Napoleon had their rations stopped.

The hens continued with their protest for five days before finally surrendering, but nine of them died in the process.
10. Napoleon plans to change the name of 'Animal Farm' back to 'Manor Farm' at the end of the novel.

Answer: True

At the end of the novel, Napoleon and the pigs are eating and drinking with Mr Pilkington. Napoleon announces for the first time, that they ought to refer to the farm as 'Manor Farm', which, he believed, was its rightful name. Napoleon therefore abolished the name 'Animal Farm' at the end of the last chapter.
