Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Akbar, the third Emperor of the Mughal dynasty, ruled over India in the latter half of the 16th century. Birbal was one of the 'Navratnas' in his court. What does the term 'Navratna' mean?

Answer: Nine Jewels

The 'Navratna' consisted of nine courtiers of Akbar's court and were men with varied talents. They included Tansen, a musician, Faizi, a poet and Raja Todar Mal, his finance minister, among others. Though Birbal is sometimes depicted as a court jester, Akbar was very impressed with his wit and presence of mind and often came to him with problems facing the kingdom.
2. Sometimes Akbar liked to test Birbal. One day as they walked around in the palace gardens, Akbar spotted a flock of crows and asked Birbal if he could tell him the exact number of crows in the kingdom. After thinking for a while, Birbal gave an exact figure. When Akbar asked him what explanation would he give if they had the crows counted and the number turned out to be higher than the one quoted, what did Birbal claim the additional crows were?

Answer: Guests of the native crows who had come to visit their relatives.

Birbal also told him that if they found that the number of crows was less than what he had claimed, it meant that some of the kingdom's crows had gone to the neighbouring countries to visit their relatives there.
3. Akbar was very upset one morning when he found out that some valuables were missing from the palace. He realised that it was an inside job and asked Birbal to trap the thief. Birbal gave all the servants identical sticks and told them to keep them overnight. He claimed the sticks were magical and the thief's stick would grow by two inches. Next day when all the sticks were examined, how did Birbal identify the culprit's stick?

Answer: It was two inches shorter than the others.

Afraid that the sticks really were magical, the thief had cut his stick by two inches so that when it grew overnight, it would still be the same length as the others.
4. Visitors from distant lands came to Akbar's court to impress him and win rewards. Once a foreigner arrived at the palace who was able to speak fluently in multiple languages and challenged Akbar to identify his native tongue. What method did Birbal use in this situation?

Answer: He doused him with cold water when he was fast asleep at night.

Akbar requested the foreigner to stay as a palace guest while he thought of a way to respond to his challenge. As usual, Birbal was given the task of solving this puzzle. When Birbal had cold water thrown on the foreigner while he was fast asleep, he was startled and immediately started yelling in a particular language. Thus, Birbal was able to guess his native tongue.

He knew that when the foreigner awoke with a fright, the first words he would blurt out would be in the language he was most comfortable in.
5. Birbal was taking a walk in the city when a man approached him and began telling him how he had travelled a great distance only to meet him and all along the way, the people he met told him what a kind and generous man Birbal was. What did Birbal guess the man was about to ask him for?

Answer: Money

Birbal guessed that the man was going to ask him for money. Hence, before the man could say anything more he asked him if he would be returning to his village by the same route. When the man said he would, Birbal asked him to deny the rumours of his generosity on his way back.
6. One day Akbar asked his ministers what they would choose if they were given a choice between a gold coin and justice. What did Birbal opt for?

Answer: The gold coin

The king was aghast that Birbal made such a choice and expressed his deep disappointment. Birbal then explained that a person will always choose something that he doesn't already have. Since Akbar ruled the kingdom with fairness, every citizen already had justice. Hence he had chosen the gold coin.
7. Akbar often travelled to distant parts of his kingdom to meet his subjects and see how they were living. On one such journey, Akbar was tired and asked his ministers if any of them could shorten the journey. How did Birbal manage this difficult feat?

Answer: He started narrating a tale to the king.

Akbar was so engrossed in listening to the story that when they finally reached their destination, he exclaimed, "So soon?"
8. While the king was relaxing one evening, he asked Birbal if it was possible for a person to be the 'lowliest' as well as the 'noblest' at the same time. When Birbal said that it was possible, Akbar asked him to bring such a person to his court. Whom did Birbal bring?

Answer: A beggar

When Akbar saw him, he stated that it was obvious that the beggar was one of his lowliest subjects but he didn't understand how he could also be the 'noblest' among them. Birbal then explained that in spite of being a beggar, this man had got an audience with the king himself, thus making him the 'noblest' among all the beggars in the kingdom.
9. Akbar gathered all his ministers and asked them what punishment they would suggest for someone who had pulled the king's moustache. What was Birbal's suggestion?

Answer: He should be given sweets.

While all the other ministers suggested dire punishments, Birbal had correctly guessed that the offender was none other than the king's grandchild. Hence, he suggested that the king should give him sweets.
10. Birbal's fame had spread far and wide and a neighbouring king invited him to his kingdom. When Birbal arrived there, he was asked to identify the king from among six men who were dressed identically. How did Birbal achieve this?

Answer: The other five kept looking at their king for directions.

The king was amazed that Birbal was able to correctly identify him. When asked to explain, Birbal said that while the other five kept looking at the king for cues on how to behave, the king himself looked straight ahead. Thus, the king's subjects always looked towards him for support and guidance.
