Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Chachi 420": A divorced man pretends to be a female housekeeper to stay close to his children.

Answer: Mrs. Doubtfire

"Mrs. Doubtfire" starred Robin Williams in the eponymous role. Williams' character Daniel was a divorced actor who pretended to be a female housekeeper to be close to his children. Sally Field played his ex-wife. Williams won the Golden Globe award for Best Actor for this performance.

The Bollywood version had Kamal Hassan reprising Williams' role while Tabu played his estranged wife. 420 is commonly used slang in Hindi to denote a trickster while chachi means aunt. Apart from the addition of various songs, the Hindi version also had parallel tracks with other members of the wife's household falling in love with the cross-dressing chachi.
2. "Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya": A woman falls in love with a married man and then stalks him and his family.

Answer: Fatal Attraction

In "Fatal Attraction", a married lawyer Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) has a short fling with an editor Alex (Glenn Close). Unfortunately for him, Alex is not ready to back off even after learning that he is married. Instead she stalks him, kills his daughter's pet bunny and threatens his family.

"Fatal Attraction" was the inspiration behind the Hindi film "Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya". Jai, a photographer, flirts and tries to woo Ria in order to get her to model for him. He succeeds but Ria ends up falling in love with him. After getting to know of his marriage, she turns obsessive and tries to get his wife out of the way. The characters of Jai and Ria were played by Fardeen Khan and Urmila Matondkar.
3. "Deewangee": A man accused of murder pretends to have multiple personality disorder to get away with it.

Answer: Primal Fear

"Primal Fear" was based on the novel of the same name by William Diehl. Richard Gere plays Martin Vail, a defence attorney, who takes up the case of Aaron Stampler, a young altar boy accused of murdering the archbishop. Stampler was played by Edward Norton. During the investigation, Vail learns that Stampler suffers from multiple personality disorder and the murder was committed by one of the other, more violent personas.

"Deewangee" borrowed the premise of a murderer pretending to have multiple personality disorder from "Primal Fear". The film starred Ajay Devgan as the murder accused. This was his first portrayal of a negative character, having mainly played the romantic lead in earlier movies.
4. "Phir Milenge": A lawyer defends an executive fired for being HIV positive.

Answer: Philadelphia

In "Philadelphia", Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is a gay lawyer who contracts AIDS in a sexual encounter. When Beckett is sacked after his employers find out about his sickness, he decides to take them to court for discrimination. Denzel Washington plays Joe Miller, the lawyer who fights Beckett's case. "Philadelphia" was one of the first mainstream Hollywood movies on the subject of AIDS. Its sensitive handling of this issue won the film critical acclaim.

"Phir Milenge" was inspired by "Philadelphia". However, the film did not have the protagonist in a same-sex relationship. Instead Tamanna, played by Shilpa Shetty, gets HIV through a romantic relationship with her college sweetheart Rohit (Salman Khan). Abhishek Bachchan played the lawyer, Tarun, who fought Tamanna's case.
5. "Aashiqui 2": A popular singer takes a newcomer under his wings and helps her find fame while his own career declines.

Answer: A Star is Born

There have been multiple remakes of the film "A Star is Born". The original movie was released in 1937 with remakes in 1954 and 1976. The 1976 version starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles. The story follows the familiar trajectory of a well established star taking a newbie under his wings and helping her find acclaim.

The Bollywood remake was named "Aashiqui 2" and featured Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapoor in the lead roles. Though it was named "Aashiqui 2", it had nothing in common with "Aashiqui" which released in the early 1990s. The film was later also remade in other Indian languages.
6. "Yeh Dillagi": Two wealthy brothers fall in love with their family driver's daughter.

Answer: Sabrina

"Sabrina" starred Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Hepburn played the title role of Sabrina, the daughter of the Larrabee family chauffeur while Bogart and Holden played the sons of the Larrabee family. Sabrina is in love with David Larrabee who despite being a playboy never takes notice of her. When she returns after spending two years at a culinary school in Paris, she finds both David and his brother Linus attracted to her.

"Yeh Dillagi" borrowed the same premise of the original film and featured Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in the lead roles.
7. "Aitraaz": A married man is accused of sexual harassment by his former girlfriend turned boss.

Answer: Disclosure

The film "Disclosure" was based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The movie had Michael Douglas and Demi Moore in the lead roles. Dealing with sexual harassment at the work place, the film reversed stereotypes by having the female character Meredith (Moore) harassing her co-worker Tom (Douglas) who also happened to be a former lover.

"Aitraaz" had Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra playing the former lovers turned co-workers with Kareena Kapoor playing Kumar's wife.
8. "Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi": A rich heiress on the run from her family is helped by a reporter looking for a scoop.

Answer: It Happened One Night

Frank Capra's "It Happened One Night" was a critical and commercial success. It was the first film to win all five major Oscar awards - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. The plot is simple. A rich heiress played by Claudette Colbert elopes against her father's wishes. On her way to meet her husband, she enlists the help of a reporter played by Clark Gable to help her reach her destination only to end up falling in love with him.

The Hindi version stays true to the original in the overall plot, though there are additional subplots and many songs to ensure it fits the typical Bollywood mould. Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt play the lead roles.
9. "Ghajini": A man hunts for his wife's killer using tattoos and photographs as aids to counter his short term memory loss.

Answer: Memento

"Memento" is a thriller directed by Christopher Nolan. Leonard (Guy Pearce) suffers from anterograde amnesia, which means that he loses all new memories after every five minutes. He is on the trail of the man who raped and killed his wife but his memory loss makes it difficult to remember and retain clues. To counter this, he takes photos and notes of everything to maintain a track record. The film plays out in a non-linear manner which keeps viewers on edge trying to figure out the sequence of events.

"Ghajini" borrows various plot points from the original though the makers refuse to admit it was inspired by the Hollywood film. The romance between the leads is fleshed out further in this film and unlike the original, there is a real villain who had killed the main character's love interest.
10. "God Tussi Great Ho": A reporter is given God's powers after he complains about the unfairness faced by him.

Answer: Bruce Almighty

Jim Carrey plays Bruce Nolan, a television reporter who can't seem to catch a break in the movie "Bruce Almighty". His frequent complaints finally reach God (played by Morgan Freeman) who transfers his powers to Bruce to let him see if he can run the world better. What follows are a series of screw ups leading to a predictable ending with a now reformed Bruce learning the error of his ways.

"God Tussi Great Ho" stars Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Sohail Khan in the lead roles with Amitabh Bachchan who plays God.
