Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What college is Pete Riley studying in?

Answer: University of Maine

In the college there are three dorms: Chamberlain and King (men) and then Franklin (women). A dining hall, Holyoke Commons (or, as they called it, Palace on the Plains). Pete lived in Chamberlain and dormed with Nathan Hoppenstand. The floor-proctor was David "Dearie" Dearborn, an annoying guy that was also part of the ROTC program.
2. Who was the guy that "led" the Hearts "disease"?

Answer: Ronnie Malenfant

Ronnie Malenfant: red kinky hair, almost no chin, big brow, big eyes, dripping nose, lots of pimples, red, red, lips. He is the one that pretty much started the Hearts marathon. Ronnie was a big loud-mouth and was always bragging about girls even though he couldn't get one if he was the last guy on Earth. He eventually dropped out and joined the military in Vietnam.
3. What card is the one they are always trying to "hunt"?

Answer: Queen of Spades

Pete and Ronnie were the best card players in the dormitory. Of course, the game cut into school work and cut into their wallets.
4. What was Stokely Jones' nickname?

Answer: Rip-rip

He always mumbled this sound while walking around on his crutches. He had a lot of curly black hair, was skinny, and always seemed sick. He hated the name Rip-rip.
5. Who did Pete work with in the lunch line that he eventually had a relationship with?

Answer: Carol Gerber

Yeah, the Carol Gerber from Part 1. She told Pete about Bobby and Sully. She had dated Sully for a while before college. I can't leave out that Pete "did it" for the first time with Carol before she left to go back home. The Platters' "Twilight Time" was playing on the radio in the car. I think he really loved her, it's a shame she had to leave him.
6. Who spray painted the words on the side wall of the dorm?

Answer: Stoke Jones

Stoke Jones was part of the Committee of Resistance and introduced the peace sign (or the "sparrow track") and almost everyone had a peace sign on something they owned after that. When the heads of the college showed up to question the students, they used the peace sign on Jones' sweatshirt to prove he was the only one who knew the sign (the sign was on the wall along with "Johnson! Killer President U.S. Out of Vietnam Now!").

They all stuck up for Jones by holding up things which they had peace signs on.
7. What did the guys do first when they saw Stokely Jones climbing up the icy hill?

Answer: Laughed

Cruel huh? I really don't think I could laugh at a cripple trying to scramble up an icy hill. Even when he fell, they were still laughing while carrying him down to the nurse. But at least they helped him. While they were lifting him Jones said "Let me die. For once in your stupid greedy-me-me lives do something worthwhile. Put me down and let me die."
8. Pete and Skip Kirk stopped playing Hearts, got their grades up, and graduated.

Answer: True

Yes, the two best friends quit together and studied in Pete and Nathan's room. I bet Nathan was happy to see that (he never played Hearts and hated the game).
9. What was Nate aspiring to become?

Answer: A dentist

He studied hard and worked well. He had a picture of his girlfriend, Cindy, and his dog, Rinty, on the wall. Later on he did become a dentist with his own office and everything. One thing about him that Skip always poked fun at was his music collection, especially "Diane Renay Sings Navy Blue".
10. What were Nathan Hoppenstand and Carol Gerber in the newspaper for?

Answer: A draft protest

The headline was: "POLICE BREAK UP DRAFT PROTEST". They held signs like "U.S. OUT OF VIETNAM NOW!" and started up a fight with construction workers. After Pete told Nate he was in the news, he broke down and told him that he didn't yell or march or anything like that, he was too afraid his mom would see him in the pictures.

He was on the Committee of Resistance and meant to march, but just couldn't. Of course, he's still against the war.
11. Pete hated Nate's album of Phil Ochs, and his song "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore".

Answer: False

No, he actually liked it and thought it was similar to Bob Dylan, but simpler. It suggested that the war over in Vietnam wasn't worth it, and one line said "I must have killed a million men and now they want me back again but I ain't marchin' anymore."
12. What did Carol send in her letter to Pete?

Answer: A newspaper article

Headline: "6 INJURED, 14 ARRESTED AS DRAFT OFFICE PROTEST TURNS INTO MELEE" Carol had blood on her cheek and a peace sign made in her own fingers, smiling like she didn't know the cop was restraining her and her head was bleeding. On her sign was "STOP THE MURDER".

In her letter was a Hallmark Christmas card and a note, saying she's doing fine, she misses him, and wishes he wouldn't write her, just because. She gave him the "Lord of the Flies" book she told him that Bobby used to love as a gift. She told him to get out of the card games, which he already had, and on the title page of the book was "*heart with arrow through it* + *peace sign* = INFORMATION ("information" just a inside joke they had, about "The Prisoner"). So love plus peace equals info.
13. What did Skip Kirk become?

Answer: An artist

So Skip became an artist, a good one also. Critics called him the flavor of the month, a trite mind, energetic, honest, angry, and sad. He had a heart attack and that's when he and Pete reunited, in the hospital. He had quit smoking. They talked about Nathan and his latest Christmas card, Stokley Jones and why they laughed, and what the worst habit was. Tears rolling down his face, he said: "We tried, don't you ever forget that, Pete. We tried."
14. Back when Hearts first started, Pete beat Ronnie.

Answer: True

Pete beat him and Ronnie freaked out!
15. How does Pete describe the smell of the 60s and 70s?

Answer: Earth, oranges, and flowers.

He also said that they had forgotten the language of back then, bell-bottom jeans, home-tie-dyed shirts, Nehru jackets, and signs with peace slogans running across them. And Information.
