Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dick Hallorann provides Danny with which of these, allowing him to seal away ghosts?

Answer: Lockbox

After the Overlook Hotel burned down in Colorado, there were only three survivors-- Wendy and Danny Torrance, and Dick Hallorann. Of them, only Danny was physically unhurt. A few years later, in 1981, Danny saw his first spirit outside the Overlook. Heading to the bathroom one night in his mother's Florida home, he saw the woman he once encountered in Room 217. It's why Wendy called Hallorann to help, and he came with a gift. Hallorann informed the boy that they were teacher and student of the shining, just as he and his grandmother were many years ago. When his grandfather came back as a spirit, his grandmother gave him a way to seal the awful man away once and for all. Similarly, Hallorann gives Danny a lockbox, telling him to learn every bit of it. It's with a similar lockbox, in his mind, that Danny is able to start sealing away the vengeful spirits he continues to find.

Many years later, as an adult, Danny finds himself drinking and suffering from visions. After leaving behind Deenie, a woman he met in a bar, he makes his way out from Wilmington and heads north to New York, then Massachusetts, then New Hampshire.

Meanwhile, Andrea (Andi) Steiner is watched by a trio of people-- Barry, Grampa Flick, and Rose, who wears a top hat. Bringing her into their fold, they convince Andi to join them, consuming steam and being a part of the True Knot. After surviving a ceremony known as the Turning, she becomes part of their mysterious collective.
2. It appears that Abra Stone was able to predict which of these events?

Answer: The September 11 attacks

Dan takes jobs as he heads north, eventually landing in Frazier, New Hampshire and meeting a maintenance man named Billy Freeman who, oddly, operates the novelty train in the town's Teenytown attraction. It appears that Billy himself may have a bit of the shine because he takes a quick liking to Dan and sends him to the town's maintenance supervisor, Casey Kingsley, to get a job, room, and board. Ironically, Dan is employed as a caretaker, not unlike his father was at the Overlook. Things go well for Dan in Frazier, at least until he starts dreaming of Deenie and her warnings to stay away from the woman in the hat. Worse, he begins experiencing double dreams-- dreams within dreams that he believes contain significant truth. On one occasion, he finds his bathtub full of blood; scrawled on the mirror is the word REDRUM in red lipstick.

When Billy finds Dan preparing to drink to quell his visions, he sends him to Casey who, subsequently, enrols him in Alcoholics Anonymous, forcing him to stay for a ninety-day stay of sobriety. At AA, Dan writes the name ABRA, believing it to be important, but not knowing why.

Twenty miles away, Abra Rafaella Stone is born to Lucy and David. Born with a caul, Abra is believed by her grandmother to be born with a second sight. It's not long after Abra's birth that Lucy and David have odd dreams, both involving numbers painted on their daughter's chest in blood. They're awakened by the baby's screaming and, when she fails to stop, they take her to the hospital. She doesn't cease until the news rolls in that two planes have struck the World Trade Center buildings, and both planes are the numbers Lucy and David saw in their dreams.

The True Knot, meanwhile, departs from a KOA campground in Arizona and arrives in New Jersey on September 8th. When the planes collide across the river, they remain there, watching, and breathing in the steam.
3. The cat who resides in Helen Rivington House is named after which archangel?

Answer: Azrael

A few years after his arrival in Frazier, Dan finds himself working at the Helen Rivington House, a care facility for the elderly. At this point, he's almost three years sober and still attending his AA meetings. One of his AA friends, Doctor John, finds that something is uncanny about the way Dan is able to read into minds as he does, but it's not completely unusual, especially since three-year old Abra Stone is one of his patients. When John attends Abra's birthday party, he bears witness to an odd event-- the girl is able to make the spoons in her parents' kitchen seemingly magnetize to the ceiling with her mind. And that's just the tip of the iceberg according to her family.

A couple of months later, the cat of Helen Rivington house, Azzie, takes post with Mr. Hayes, a sign in the house that he's on his final days. With that, Dan is called for. In recent years he's been regarded as an important tool for the home; the locals refer to him as Doctor Sleep as he is usually present to help the infirm cross over to the other side, whatever that may be. That night, he joins Azzie and helps Mr. Hayes pass on. He's not the only one in the room, however, as he feels Abra's presence with him. Abra, from her bed at home, realizes that she helped before she falls asleep.
4. When Dan becomes aware of a person's unknown and life-threatening maladies, he sees which of these on their face?

Answer: Flies

In 2011, ten years after Dan's arrival in Frazier, the True Knot finds themselves set up in Colorado with their numbers dwindling. Good steam appears to be in short supply and their people are dying of malnutrition. With their caravan almost out of canisters, Rose makes the decision to release one of them, harvested from a young boy from the 1990s, before they set out on the road, passing through Iowa and torturing a young boy for more.

Abra wakes up from a nightmare that night, calling to her imaginary friend, Tony, for help since she can't get through to Tony's dad, Dan. Rose senses her watching from more than a thousand miles away and, later, acknowledges the child would fill a lot of canisters. She and the True Knot head south instead, planning to let her ripen for a few years.

Dan, meanwhile, sees spectral flies on Billy Freeman's face and Casey, sensing that Dan knows something is wrong, has him call up Doctor John and find a proper doctor for their friend. What they find is that there's a bubble in his aorta, and had Dan not called it out, Billy likely would've had an aneurysm. Dan nearly caves, after ten years, in buying a drink. Instead he returns to the hospice and heads down to Mr. Cameron's room to get to work. Azzie has roosted there, and Doctor Sleep's services are needed.

It's two years before Dan hears from Abra again, and something would would lie sleeping, dormant in the True Knot all that time while they wait.
5. Dan is able to speak to a dead Dick Hallorann, but only through which means?

Answer: Through the use of a dead body

Abra is heading into the eighth grade when her grandmother has her accident, and it's during her mother's absence that she picks up the mail and comes across the 'Anniston Shopper', reading it to find a missing children's page and Bradley's face. She, of course, knows him from her vision years earlier; he's the boy from Iowa. Using her abilities she searches back through time and memory to determine where he was taken but her ability gets out of hand, transporting her mind into the perpetrator's; she appears in a supermarket behind the eyes of Rose the Hat. As soon as Abra realizes something is wrong, she blasts out of Rose's mind. It's too late, however. Rose knows it's time to collect her steam, and since she's so powerful, the True Knot could use her for years

One day in the fall, Dan's head explodes. Knowing something is wrong, he receives Abra's email and the two meet outside the library, discussing their abilities and thinking on the woman with the top hat. Both know that the True Knot isn't close, but Abra would be good food for them, so they need to be cautious. As Dan leaves, he remembers what his vision of Deenie said more than a decade earlier-- that he should stay away from the woman with the hat. It's times like these that Dan wishes he could consult Hallorann.

That night, when 102-year-old Eleanor Ouelette passes away, Dick manifests in her body to speak to Dan. He warns him of the empty devils and insists that to kill them, he needs to make them eat their own poison. In a parting word, he tells Dan to leverage his friends, the people who know, and with Abra's permission he speaks to Doctor John. The two of them, he says, can head to Iowa to find Bradley's glove.

The True Knot, camped at the former site of the Overlook Hotel, makes plans and Rose, waiting until Abra is asleep, takes the times to see through the girl's eyes and determine where they head for their feast.
6. Which of these items allows Abra to see and track the whereabouts of the True Knot?

Answer: A baseball glove

The True Knot manages to narrow Abra's whereabouts down to Anniston and Rose meditates and fasts, preparing to enter her mind from afar and find out all she needs. When she finally does so, taking a bit of steam to guide her there, she arrives to find that Abra has already set out traps, as advised by Dan. Abra manages to get into Rose's head instead, getting info that can help her and Dan fight back. Rose is barely able to return.

Dan, meanwhile, speaks to Billy and John, admitting to them that he and Abra are both able to shine-- and Billy too, to an extent-- which puts them all at risk. Dan's able to convince John to join him in Iowa while Billy stays guard in Anniston, and with that, they fly and drive out to Freeman, hunting down the spot where Bradley was killed (with Abra's memory and senses) to find the body and the baseball glove they've been sent to recover. At this point, Abra has no choice but to inform her parents of everything if not for her safety, then theirs as well.

The True Knot, meanwhile, finds their back against the wall when Grampa Flick dies, having contracted rubella from Bradley years earlier. Rose, realizing that Abra will know who she is, stays back and sends a trusted team to New Hampshire to collect her and bring her back to the Overlook. None of them realize that one of their group is also sick until they're most-way there.

Abra has the talk with her father before Dan and John return from Iowa, so when they arrive they launch into a frank discussion about the stakes at play. Though her father is skeptical at first, it's when Abra grabs the glove that things fall into place. She's able to understand that the Knot is coming for her, aiming to use her steam not only to sustain the group, but possibly cure their illnesses. With that, the group plans.
7. Dan, John, and Abra's father attempt to stop the True Knot at the Cloud Gap, but who is not amongst the group there?

Answer: Crow Daddy

While the True Knot closes in, Abra finds that she needs to be in two places at once-- on the Helen Rivington in Dan's head, to divert the Knot to the Cloud Gap, and at Emma Deane's house, safe from harm. The Knot, led by a dying Barry, heads to the former in their Winnebago knowing that time is running out, especially since some of them are showing rubella blemishes. When Barry finally cycles for the last time, however, Abra takes it as a sign that she can head home and Billy, sensing something is amiss, doesn't move to stop her from his post outside.

When the Knot arrives, Dan, Dave, and Abra's father are already at the ready and they fire on the trio in the Winnebago, killing all three of them and watching them cycle and vanish. The catch is that Crow, Rose the Hat's partner, isn't amongst them, having gotten out of the trailer in Anniston to check a hunch. Sedating Billy and stealing his truck, he finds Abra at home and gets to her when Rose reacts, psychically, to the deaths of the other Knot members. Dan, still at the Cloud Gap, realizes something is wrong when he can't use his shine to contact either of the two.

And so Crow heads west, rushing back to the knot with Billy and Abra completely sedated. When Abra finally starts to come to, he has a syringe of tranquilizers to Billy's leg and his gun at his disposal. Still drowsy, Abra can barely contact Dan, but during a rest stop she tries as hard as she can to get through...and she does.
8. Dan discovers that he and Abra are, in fact, related.

Answer: True

As the guys head back, it comes to Dan that they have to go to Boston. He reaches Abra in the meantime, asking for her assistance, no matter how sedated, to turn the world and with that he gets into her head, pulling the levers that allow him to take control of her body and abilities. He uses Abra to subdue Crow, in turn waking Billy from the back seat, and with that they kill Crow together. Rose, of course, feels the loss immediately and terror runs through the True Knot. She tells the others that they'll regroup, take the remaining canisters of steam, and get their revenge. It's there, while they stand in their circle, that Abra comes to her and says that the Knot can stay put; she'll come to them.

Dan, meanwhile, returns to his body and brings everyone together in Boston, first meeting Abra's great-grandmother while John takes her father to meet with her mother, Lucy. The nurse informs Dan that her great-grandmother doesn't have very long to live, having slipped into a coma, but Dan is able to speak to her and bring her forth nonetheless, asking a favour of her before she finds her way.

When the others arrive at the hospital, Lucy demands an explanation and the truth is that she and Dan, as he has deduced, are half-siblings-- his father and her mother had a brief relationship before Dan was born. That evening, before they reconvene with Abra and Billy, he and Lucy find the truth out from the belongings in her mother's old trunk. It's with this serendipitous revelation that they all realize Abra will have to fight back, otherwise Rose and the True Knot will never stop trying to get her.

In Colorado, despite Rose's efforts, some of the True Knot departs on their own. Those who stay decide to prepare for their vengeance.
9. Where does Rose intend to meet Abra for their final confrontation?

Answer: The Roof o' the World

Before heading west, Dan looks up the Overlook on the internet and contacts Abra, formulating a plan. Abra wakes up from a long and restful night in the hotel and, on Dan's suggestion, calls Rose directly, goading her intentionally and setting things in motion. Before he leaves Boston, Dan checks his face in the mirror and finds it's covered in spectral flies.

Once everyone reunites, Abra heads home with her parents and Doctor John, staying with Dan in his mind. Billy, meanwhile, volunteers to drive Dan to Colorado, a choice that both Dan and Abra agree feels right. It gives Dan the opportunity to explain what's been concerning him, a choice that explains why Dan spends the entire drive sick, unable to eat, and suffering from nightmares about Abra's death at the Overlook. But soon enough, they arrive in Colorado, continuing to lay the tricky seeds of their plan. Their last steps, arriving in Boulder, are to stop at Dan's childhood apartment and to stop off at a closing clothing store. Their last items to grab are clothes and a child mannequin.

In New Hampshire, Abra sends her parents away while in the Rockies, Dan and Billy pull up to the Bluebell Campground. Dan thinks inwardly at the third and final lockbox he's created in his mind-- one struggling to open, leaking into his body. There will be no choice but to open it when the time comes.

Rose, meanwhile, waits atop the Roof o' the World at the Overlook. Silent Sarey waits in the shadows, almost unnoticeable. The battleground is set.
10. Dan is freed from the sickness plagued upon him when he does which of these?

Answer: Releases the spirit within him

While Billy takes the truck up to the Overlook, Dan heads up on foot, giving the opportunity for everyone to get into position. Abra returns to Dan's mind and joins him at the hub in the center of the wheel in their mind, a space that looks like Dan's childhood bedroom. And with that, the two of them prepare to open the lockboxes stowed away there. As Billy rolls in and Rose catches wind of the fact that something is amiss, Dan opens the first two boxes finding that while Mrs. Massey is nothing but a pile of ash, Horace Derwent is quite well enough to do what they need him to.

Dan heads to the lounge of the Overlook first, finding the bulk of the True Knot there, waiting, and that's when he opens his third lockbox, the one containing the powerful spirit of Abra's great-grandmother. As she passes through the room, her steam-- like the steam that they had sought for many years-- washes through and kills them all in moments. Rose, feeling the immediate loss, grabs hold of Dan's mind in a fury and brings him back to the hub of the wheel, taking his mind over and making him believe that he's able to kill her when really, he's killing Abra. They're all saved, however, when Billy drives his truck into the lookout platform at the Roof o' the World, snapping them out of the vision.

As Dan and Abra leave the hub behind and Billy retreats to the Overlook, Abra regathers herself and Dan proceeds to battle Rose. Rose calls on Sarey, asking her to exact her revenge for Andi, but Sarey is disposed of by Horace Derwent, back on his home ground. It gives Abra and Dan the opportunity to fight her two-on-one, using their combined efforts to force her off the cliffside, killing her when she hits the rocky ground below. It means the end of the True Knot and the threat altogether. While Abra returns to her own body, Dan burns Rose's hat, catching a glimpse of his father's spirit from afar and sending his goodbye.

Billy and Dan return to Frazier and, eventually, things return to normal. Dan claims his fifteen-year coin from AA and deals with his last ghosts while, at the same time, Abra celebrates her fifteenth birthday and copes with her powers, turning her emotions somewhere safe. After her birthday party, Dan receives a call from the Helen Rivington House. Doctor Sleep is needed once again.
