Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Alanna when 'In the Hand of the Goddess' begins?

Answer: In a forest

We rejoin our intrepid hero on a rainy night in the forest. She is returning to the palace after fetching some documents for her friend Sir Myles. Whilst in the forest she encounters Faithful, and is visited by the Great Mother Goddess, who gives her the ember-stone.

The desert is where the first book ends, and where Alanna spends most of the third book. By this time she doesn't go to Trebond much anymore, as she no longer considers it her home.
2. Alanna happens upon a kitten and adopts it (or it adopts her). Her friends suggested names for it...What was Gary's choice?

Answer: Raoul

He went for this name based on the fact that the kitten is black, and Raoul has black hair...quite logical, really. Blackie was Raoul's suggestion, and Pounce was Jonathan's choice. Alanna decided on 'Faithful', a very good name for a cat who turns out to be a loyal friend and a wise counsellor.
3. During her duel with Dain of Melor, a knight from Tusaine, Alanna is wounded in her right arm.

Answer: True

After Dain implies that Tortallans are rubbish warriors, Jonathan suggests that he should fight Alanna, to show that even Tortallan pages and squires are capable of holding their own against any knight. The code of chivalry states that in duels like this, the first person to draw blood is the winner, and the match is over.

After being wounded in the arm, Alanna concedes defeat, but Dain has other ideas. He continues to attack her, showing that he has little honour. This really angers Alanna, who then pulls out her best moves, and defeats the Tusaine knight.
4. Where does Prince Jonathan first kiss Alanna?

Answer: At the Drell River

This occurs when Alanna is healing after she broke her arm in battle. Jonathan healed her himself, fearing that another healer would discover that Alanna was actually a girl. The kiss just sort of...happened, and they were both quite embarrassed afterwards.
5. In the hunt for the wolf called Demon Grey, how many wolves do the hunting party bring down?

Answer: Four

The King kills one, Duke Roger kills Demon Grey's mate, and Alanna slays Demon Grey himself after he attacks her, under the influence of Roger's magic. Another wolf is killed, along with a 'mean boar', but we aren't told who bags them.
6. The Trebond arms are a red castle on a black field.

Answer: False

No, it's a black castle on a red field. Thom presents Alanna with her shield after she is knighted by King Roald. Later, he shows her that under the Trebond arms is a lioness rampant, which will be her arms after she reveals her true identity.
7. When does Alanna realise that her ember-stone is magical?

Answer: At the wolf hunt

After being attacked by Demon Grey, Alanna holds the stone for comfort. It is then that she notices that the bodies of Demon Grey and his mate are surrounded by orange magic, the colour of Duke Roger's Gift. She does some experiments on the stone later, which prove that it can show her when magic has been performed. It also confirms that Roger is definitely trying to kill her.

After Alanna falls through ice whilst skating, the ember-stone saves her from drowning by melting a hole in the ice to allow her to escape to the surface. Thom performs an extremely powerful spell on the stone, a word of Command, which shows that the stone is of immortal origin. However, both these things happen after the wolf hunt.
8. Besides Jonathan, which knight does Alanna ask to instruct her before she takes her Ordeal of Knighthood?

Answer: Sir Gareth the Younger of Naxen

As Alanna's knight-master, it is taken for granted that Jonathan will be one of the knights to instruct her in the Code of Chivalry before her Ordeal. However, it is traditional that two knights perform this task, which worries Alanna, as asking anyone to be the second knight would involve revealing her true identity. Jonathan suggests she ask Gary, as he would most likely treat her masquerade as a huge joke, which turns out to be correct!

Whilst Gary and Jonathan both know the truth about Alanna being a girl, poor Raoul has to wait to find out that fact until it is revealed to the entire court, as does Duke Gareth.
9. What prevented Duke Gareth of Naxen from leading the Tortallan army in the war against Tusaine?

Answer: A broken leg

Foul play was definitely at work when Duke Gareth's horse suddenly threw him. Alanna discovered that the man who saddled his horse disappeared, and that a burr had been stuck in the saddle blanket, which caused the Duke's horse a lot of pain. This was yet another of Roger of Conte's plots to put Jonathan in harm's way...
10. At the end of the book, Alanna decides to ride south with Coram, in search of adventure. Why does she do this?

Answer: All of these

Alanna is one of those people who feels the cold keenly, and goes outside in several layers of clothing in winter. Naturally, she wants to winter somewhere warm, like the desert. Only a handful of people knew the truth about her identity before it was accidentally revealed during her duel with Roger of Conte, and it caused a huge scandal. Alanna doesn't like people talking about her, even if they are saying nice things, so she feels that she has to leave the Court for a while to let people get used to the idea of a female knight.

Although Alanna killed Roger fair and square, immediately after the duel she doesn't feel right about it. She needs some time to think, away from her world, in order to come to terms with what she achieved, and the plot that she foiled.
