"The Red Pony" started off in life as a series of short stories published in periodicals, and was finally printed in full as a novella in 1937. The book consists of four stories about Jody Tiflin which begins with him being given a red pony to look after and care for. Unfortunately Jody does not do a good job and the pony dies.

"Red Dog" is a very moving short story about a red kelpie dog in Australia. The story involves a stray dog that hitches rides from person to person, becoming attached to John. John dies in a motorbike accident and Red Dog does not know this. The dog goes searching for John and the book follows his adventures.
It does not have a happy ending. There is also a movie to watch, which is very Australian, again without a happy ending.
6. The Horror at Red Hook

This is a dark novel, following an Irish detective Detective Malone investigating an incident in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The location is bleak and described as a waterfront slum, with gangs and crime, and hints at an occult underbelly.
Malone is sent to investigate the "case of Robert Suydam", in which Suydam's demeanor changes suddenly. Previously known as a shabby recluse, he is now seen around town looking younger and more radiant. He marries a wealthy woman and whilst honeymooning aboard a ship, both are found murdered. The mystery continues and you will need to read the book to follow the further intrigue and ending.
7. The Red Heart

"The Red Heart" is about peace-loving Quakers who are white settlers who respect and believe that the Indians hold the Light of God inside of them. Unfortunately for this family, their daughter Frances is abducted by the same Indians.
Whilst Frances is terrified in the beginning, over time she becomes a part of the sacred work that her adoptive mother is teaching her. As a result Frances becomes Maconakwa, Little Bear Woman, of the tribe of Indian who captured her.
The tribe's leader, Tecumseh, is killed and the tribe is in dire straits with the fear of all being lost. Frances' parents seek out their daughter to be re-united but will she choose to be with them or is she now truly a red one?

Written in 2001, this is a picture book by Shaun Tan that relates to a dark world travelled. A lonely red-headed girl deals with depression and explains her world. Each artwork includes a red leaf which symbolises hope. This is a beautiful story that should be read by anyone who wants hope at the end of a story.
