Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which brother does Ivan share the same mother?

Answer: Alexey

Sofia, the second wife of Fyodor, was mother for both Ivan and Alexey. But mentally Ivan is closer to Smerdyakov. Interestingly, Dmitri is also a half-brother to both of them, as well as Smerdyakov, but many readers tend to forget this!
2. Despite his atheistic views, Ivan receives a blessing. Who gives him this blessing?

Answer: elder Zosima

It happens in the monastery, in which all the family gathers.
Zosima is not a sinless person, however. In his young age he took part in the duel and beat his servant, also he repented hereafter. To err is human. :)
3. In his "Rebellion" Ivan is the most outraged by what injustice?

Answer: suffering of the innocent children

This "tear of the innocent child" is a rather popular idiom in Russia.
There Ivan introduces the classic "Problem of Evil".
I suggest that suffering of the innocent adults is equally evil, but, of course, children are more sentimental example.
4. Where was Smerdyakov, Ivan's half-brother and "shadow", born?

Answer: bathhouse

Smerdyakov was conceived from rape and his mother died in childbirth. He once said to Marja, that he would have preferred not to be born at all. With this background, it is quite easy to commit patricide (although the reader doesn't know for sure) and suicide!
5. What are the main themes in "Grand Inquisitor", Ivan's poem?

Answer: the herd instinct and the burden of free will

It is nice to be a firm advocate of free will and freedom of conscience.
6. Although Ivan is a thinker, he has a love interest. Who is his love interest?

Answer: Katerina Ivanovna

Katerina Ivanovna fluctuates between Ivan and Dmitri along the whole novel.
7. Ivan says to Alyosha that he dislikes which types of people?

Answer: prophets and epileptics

And especially the God's ministers, he adds.
8. Smerdyakov says to Ivan that they are brothers because they share the same father.

Answer: False

In the novel, Ivan, as well as Dmitri and Alexey, is uncertain of their blood relation. In the Soviet movie, however, Smerdyakov says this directly to Ivan's face. :)
Zosima teaches that there must be brotherly love between masters and servants, but his teachings didn't embody in the family.
9. In his nightmare, Ivan has a conversation with the Devil himself. The Devil looks like what person?

Answer: fifty years old gentleman

Ivan apparently suffers from a split personality. Poor fellow!
But their conversation is excellent and is a favourite chapter for many readers.
10. In the end of the novel, what happens to Ivan?

Answer: becomes mentally unstable

Typical for Dostoevsky - one hero (Dmitri) is in prison, a second (Ivan) is insane and the third (Smerdyakov) commits suicide.
