Answer: Marfa Petrovna has died

Although we learn that Marfa Petrovna is Svidrigailov's wife, her death isn't noted until much later. It's understood that Svidrigailov beat her to death. Raskolnikov's sister, Avdotya, Dunia or Dunechka, is planning to marry Peter Petrovich Luzhin, and the money Luzhin makes will go to financing Raskolnikov's education at the university. Raskolnikov is furious because he doesn't think his sister should marry to please him.

Answer: Razumikhin and Zossimov

Although friends of Raskolnikov, Razumikhin and Zossimov the doctor are not related. Aliona and Lizaveta are sisters who are jointly murdered by Raskolnikov. Avdotya and Pulcheria are Raskolnikov's sister and mother respectively. Marmeladov is a drunkard that Raskolnikov meets in the bar before he murders the pawnbroker; Sonia is his daughter to his first wife. Katerina Ivanovna isn't related to Sonia by blood, but she is her stepmother and raises the young girl.

After returning to his apartment, Raskolnikov feels immensely guilty, but he also feels like he needs to remove the evidence. Concerned by a bloody sock, he spreads dirt on it until the blood is not visible. Once his friends come in and Raskolnikov becomes delirious, he constantly refers to the sock and asks Razumikhin to let him see it.

Raskolnikov writes an article about that very topic at the university, and Porfiry uses the article as one way to connect Raskolnikov to the crime.

Porfiry uses such complex mental attacks on Raskolnikov that the young man begins to sink even farther into delirium. Although he has no hard evidence that Raskolnikov did the crime, Porfiry investigates his past, especially an article that he'd written that described the nature of good and evil. Raskolnikov began to hate the lawyer with a passion, but he seemed to always return to Porfiry's office.

In fact, Raskolnikov often shows a desire to reveal his secret to Porfiry, something he never actually does.

Answer: Nastasia

Nastasia helps Raskolnikov by offering him bread, soup, and tea. Doubtless, he would not have eaten or drunk anything without Nastasia's kindness and support. Lizaveta was Aliona's sister who Raskolnikov kills in Part I. Polenka is Katerina's daughter who becomes responsible for the family after Katerina dies and Sonia leaves. Pashenka is Raskolnikov's landlady.

Answer: Nikolai burst in and claimed responsibility for the murders.

Nikolai's confession allowed Raskolnikov to survive longer, but it also allowed him to endure the torturous guilt for even longer. Unfortunately, none of the other events ever happened in the book.

Mermeladov is trampled by a horse on the street as Raskolnikov watches. Noticing the man with whom he had been drinking the previous day, Raskolnikov takes responsibility for Marmeladov's body and brings it to Katerina. He spontaneously gives the family twenty rubles that his mother had sent him, an action that prompts Sonia to form a relationship with him.

Katerina decides to spend all of the money on a grand funeral for her husband, a funeral that Raskolnikov, Luzhin, and Lebeziatnikov attend. Prior to the funeral, Luzhin gives Sonia ten rubles as a gift; however, he also slips one hundred rubles into her pocket stealthily. At the party, he accuses Sonia of stealing from him, and he reveals the hundred rubles that she had "taken". Lebeziatnikov, Luzhin's roommate and friend, saw the treachery and saved Sonia from the heinous accusation.

Soon after the party, Katerina starts hallucinating and going mad as a result of her disease. She forces her children to sing and dance on the street, but she insists that they are nobly born and deserve money. Her death and funeral follow very shortly after her husband's.

Answer: Razumikhin

She and Razumikhin, Raskolnikov's loyal friend, find love at first sight and they are married during the Epilogue. Luzhin, Dunia's first love, is rejected by Raskolnikov early on. During an interview with the Raskolnikov family, Luzhin is cast out, and Dunia scorns him. Svidrigailov is also in love with Dunia, but she doesn't care much for him.

His original maltreatment of Dunia when she was governess for Marfa Petrovna lingers with her, so she refuses him, even after Svidrigailov locks her in his apartment with him. Lebeziatnikov is Luzhin's honest, idealist friend who saves Sonia from public scandal after Luzhin unfairly accuses the girl of stealing money from him.

Answer: Raskolnikov confesses to the crime

The last sentences of "Crime and Punishment" before the epilogue are "'It was I who killed the old pawnbroker woman and her sister Lizaveta with an axe and robbed them.' Ilia Petrovich opened his mouth. People ran up on all sides. Raskolnikov repeated his statement." The epilogue then continues with Raskolnikov being sentenced to Siberia and Sonia following him there.
