In 1944, Raymond Belvedon and his men are fighting in France. They drive the Germans out of a village and Raymond Belvedon is sent to check out a nearby chateau which is deserted. There he finds a beautiful portrait of 'Pandora' which he smuggles home in a German shell case.

The portrait is treasured by the whole family and is hung in a small, locked, turret bedroom to keep it safe and secret.

The picture shows Pandora's Box, Epimetheus and his wife, Pandora with Hope on one side and the Seven Deadly Sins in the process of leaving to go into the world. It was painted by Raphael and has been listed as missing for many years. Richard Belvedon's story is that the picture was a gift from a dying Nazi.

Raymond Belvedon is 37 and single. Galena Borochova is a well known artist, who is more absorbed by painting than her family. She is unfaithful, outrageous and charismatic. Jupiter, her eldest son, hates her for her neglect. She loves her second son, Alizarin, who adores her.

When her third son, Jonathon is two and her daughter, Sienna, is a few days old, she is found dead at the foot of the stairs, having died of a haemorrhage.

David Pulborough comes from a poor family. He likes and respects Raymond Belvedon, but also sees him as a way to step up in the world. Raymond trusts him and offers him a job in his art gallery when he graduates. David helps the gallery to grow, but when he realises that Raymond is going to leave the gallery to his eldest son, blood being thicker than water, David leaves, taking customers and contacts with him, and sets up his own gallery across the road from The Belvedon Gallery.

David Pulborough and Raymond Belvedon's secretary are both away, so Raymond hires a 'temp' to fill in. The 'temp' is Anthea Rookhope. Anthea is another person eager to move up in the world, and makes sure that Raymond falls in love with her. When Galena dies, he marries Anthea and they have twins, Dickie and Dora. Galena may have been a bad mother, but Anthea is worse, cold and uncaring as well as unfaithful, and the children all grow up with problems.

Raymond Belvedon and Anthea Rookhope had a brief affair before Galena Borochova's death and Emerald Cartwright was the result. When Emerald manages to find her birth mother it causes chaos in the Belvedon family.

He has his own reasons, unknown to Emerald, for wanting to go to Foxe's Court. When Emerald takes him there he is pleasant and friendly and manages to find the information he wants from talking to family members.

Emerald's new parents arrange a birthday party for her. Emerald's arrival in the family acts as a catalyst to bring all the schemes, jealousy and rivalry to a head at the same time. The party ends in chaos. After the party it is discovered that the Raphael 'Pandora' has vanished.

Zachary Ansteig's grandfather was a Jewish art dealer. The Nazis confiscated all his paintings - including the Raphael 'Pandora' - and he was assumed to have died in a concentration camp with most of Zachary's family. Zachary's aunt and his mother escaped to New York where Zachary was born. Zachary did not have a good childhood, but when she was dying his mother married Si Greenbridge, a wealthy art collector who has also been invited to Emerald's birthday party. Si informs the family that he wants to buy a Rembrandt picture.

Sienna Belvedon's painting, 'Slaughterhouse', is entered for an art show in New York. The picture is slashed by a terrorist and the Raphael 'Pandora' is found hidden behind it. The picture is confiscated and Sienna is arrested. Ownership of the portrait is not clear and the case goes to court. Revelations about how Raymond Belvedon acquired the picture and the past of Zachary Ansteig's grandfather come to light.

The judge decides that Zachary Ansteig does actually own the Raphael 'Pandora', which is returned to him. Raymond Belvedon dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards.
