Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which opera is Rannaldini planning to film, with his god-son Tristan de Montigny, a famous film producer?

Answer: Don Carlos

When Tristan de Montigny was ten years old, Rannaldini promised him that one day they would make a movie together. It is only Tristan de Montigny's reputation that has allowed Rannaldini to raise the necessary funds.
2. Which television company has agreed to invest ten million pounds in the project?

Answer: Venturer

Lord Declan O'Hara of Venturer television has provisionally agreed to invest ten million pounds in the film. One of Lord O'Hara's partners is Rupert Campbell-Black, who is less than fond of Rannaldini. When Rupert finds out about the investment he insists on taking charge of the negotiations. Rannaldini is married to Rupert's first wife, Helen, and is the step-father of Marcus Campbell-Black who won the Appleton Piano competition despite Rannaldini's scheming.
3. Where is 'Don Carlos' to be filmed?

Answer: Valhalla (Rannaldini's home)

Rupert Campbell-Black loathes Rannaldini and cannot see the point of the film at all. Valhalla and Penscombe are in the same valley, and the government want to build a motorway through it. Both Rupert and Rannaldini see the film as a way of stopping their land being used. Tristan wants the movie to be filmed at Fontainebleau because the French government have invested.

However, when Tristan sees Valhalla he agrees to shoot the film there. Valhalla is an ancient, reputedly haunted, abbey.
4. What is the name of Rupert Campbell-Black and Helen Rannaldini's daughter?

Answer: Tabitha

After Helen married Rannaldini she caught him spying on Tabitha getting undressed. She promptly packed Tabitha off to work for a stable in the USA. Tabitha saw the news coverage of her brother and events at the Appleton Piano Competition, and was caught jumping a horse when she was very drunk.

She has been suspended from riding for nine months by the American Horse Show Association and needs to come home. Rannaldini is delighted.
5. What happens when Rozzie Pringle, who is supposed to sing the part of Tebaldo, Elizabetta's page, arrives at the recording studio?

Answer: She has lost her voice.

Rozzie Pringle is a well known singer, but when she tries to sing she has lost her voice completely. Tristan de Montigny takes her to the doctor and promises her a non-singing part in the movie on condition that she helps out in the wardrobe and makeup departments. She is later assumed to have been diagnosed with throat cancer.
6. Who does Rannaldini coerce Tabitha Campbell-Black into marrying?

Answer: Isaac (Isa) Lovell

Jake Lovell (Isa's father) is even more of an enemy of Rupert Campbell-Black than Rannaldini, and trains Rannaldini's horses. Rannaldini knows that the marriage will infuriate Rupert, so he pays for the wedding. Rannaldini is becoming increasingly obsessed with Tabitha.

He knows the marriage is not likely to last, and when it falls apart he will be only too eager to console her. Rupert retaliates by cancelling the Venturer funding for the movie.
7. What happens at the filming of the auto-da-fe scene?

Answer: Tabitha is almost burnt.

Valhalla is a very old, supposedly haunted, house. Strange things keep happening, ghostly and otherwise. Tabitha is one of the heretics who are tied to stakes waiting to be burnt. The stunt has been carefully arranged, and most of the flames are to be added by the production team. Shredded paper is placed round the base of the stakes, a smoke machine is used and water is poured onto the paper.

The water container used for Tabitha's fire has been filled with petrol and it is only quick action by Tristan de Montigny that saves Tabitha's life.
8. What happens after the Valhalla Tennis Tournament?

Answer: Rannaldini's tower is set on fire and he is found dead in the woods.

Most of the cast and crew play tennis matches and celebrate afterwards. They have just split up when they realise that Rannaldini's watch tower is on fire. When they go to investigate, they find Rannaldini's body. He has been strangled and shot, and his body has been caught in the fire. Since he has offended, alienated and tried to blackmail most of the cast and crew, the police are not short of suspects. All the suspects have secrets and different reasons for lying to the police.
9. What did Rannaldini tell Tristan de Montigny about his parents, in order to break up his new relationship with Tabitha?

Answer: That his mother's father was insane.

Rannaldini is obsessed with Tabitha, and tells Tristan that he can never have children because of insanity in his family. Lucy Latimer and Wolfgang Rannaldini go to France to find out the truth from Tristan's Aunt Hortense. The insanity story is nonsense. Tristan is not the son of Etienne de Montigny or his insane, maternal grandfather but of Etienne's eldest son who was in the army and was killed just before Tristan was born.
10. Who actually did kill Rannaldini?

Answer: Rozzy Pringle

Rozzy Pringle was assumed to have a cast-iron alibi, so was not even considered as a suspect. It turns out that she has a mentally unstable crush on Tristan de Montigny and is attacking any of his favourites. Helen Rannaldini set fire to the watch tower to destroy Rannaldini's memoirs. Rupert Campbell-Black shot Rannaldin after he was dead because of his treatment of Tabitha. Tristan de Montigny was in the Forest of Dean when Rannaldini was killed.
